Could you explain to me when GPA can be 4.0 or 5.0. Can anyone summarise how the GPA scale works? My current total/cumilative high school gpa is 2.8 I’m going to junior year.
A 4.0 is usually straight A’s, a 5.0 would be a weighted GPA, high schools have different weighing systems.
What is weighted GPA?
Usually high schools give more points for AP and Honors courses. These points would increase your weighted GPA.
If your current GPA is 2.8, that is below a B average which would be a 3.0 GPA in most cases.
I would suggest that you discuss this all with your school counselor.
What exactly do you want to know relative to GPA?
An A is worth 4pts, a B =3, a C=2, a D=1.
If you’re entering junior year, you would have 12-15 classes.
If you got 11 Bs, 2 Cs, and 2 As, that’s 33+4+8.
Now, weighted means harder classes get more points. Each school does it differently but a common way is to add+.5 for each honors and +1 for each AP, IB, DE.
So if your Cs were in AP classes they’d be worth the same as B’s for your weighted GPA.
Regional state universities will use weighted GPA, the most selective public&private universities will only use unweighted (expecting 3.75+), and all universities will factor in rigor, so it’s best if you take a mix of AP and Honors classes if you’re able to do well in them.
AP classes that are good “gateways” include AP CS Principles, AP Stats (if you completed Precalculus or at least Algebra2), AP Environmental Science, AP Psychology, AP Human Geography.
