question on loans & stepparent who wont help

Ok so i remarried 17 years ago with one child from prior marriage. My daughter wants to be an RN. She had gotten a scholarship a few years ago to start as an Certified Nursing Assistant and it was a great program and got her her first paying job in a hospital which she has been working the past 2 years. So for that I am very thankful. Now my daughter is done with her pre-reqs which my husband helped pay for the courses with the college fund he had going for her but now the money is all used up. My daughter is now ready to go to nursing school (she just just got accepted to two - one of which is really wants to attend). Now my husband is acting weird since the news she has been accepted, he doesnt want to help her at all and picking fights with me over the last two days. I wasnt expecting him to pay her way but he did provide the car & paid her insurance and now wants to cut it off. Also we have 2 kids together ages 8 & 10. My daughter’s brakes gave out the other day while she was driving the car. This car is older and lately not the greatest (he always fixes the van which she drives but has been unable to fix this brake problem and making him furious as he doesnt like to take anything to a shop) but now he wants to cut her off from everything. She had to take our other spare car to work and now saying he doesnt want her taking it anymore (he doesnt even need this car to get around and only uses it occasionally) I only work a part-time job currently since my other kids are young and one with a health problem so allows for me to be close and take time off as i need even summers off (have the best boss in the world). My husband said he doesnt love me anymore and why is he helping fix this car and everything else if he doesnt care for me. Im flipping out as i dont know what to do. My daughter currently has money saved around $6,000 in the bank which has taken her years of working to earn and was supposed to go to first semester, but now looks like we will be using this for a car & her own insurance. She hasnt registered yet but was supposed to on Monday. Im so afraid to bring all of this up today that she may have to put nursing school on back burner as at the moment will need transporation to get around (so she can at least get to her job at the hospital). I have no one to ask for money, my mom can barely get by on what she has, basically not much of a family. Her father is homeless and hasnt paid child support in years and they basically arrested him so many times they dont do it anymore. Also my daughter was unable to get a student loan when we applied 2 years ago because my husband made to much money and doesnt want to be a cosigner. I feel very lost and dont know what to do. I feel like we are trapped and whenever my husband gets mad at me puts my daughter in the middle.

Wow…so sorry to hear this.

Is your D taking out student loans? If she has junior status, she can borrow up to 7500 (after filling out FAFSA) no matter how much your H earns…no co-signer needed. YOU can also co-sign a Plus loan if you want. If you’re declined, then your D can borrow $4k more, but you probably will not be declined. However, only do this if your D will pay that loan back.

Your D may need to ask her school if she can delay enrollment for one year. This will allow her to earn/save some money as well. It will also give some time to find out what’s going on with your H. I hate to say this, but it sounds like your H is contemplating either a separation or divorce. If so, you need to make sure that your little ones are adequately supported.

How old is your D? From the timeline I think I follow I would guess she is around 22? When she is 24 she will no longer need parent information for the FAFSA, and will be eligible for a larger amount in Direct Loans (approximately 11,500 for a junior) that she can take herself without a cosigner. Depending on how much she makes, she could also be eligible for federal or state grants to finish her degree.

Unfortunately, this may mean she has to take a year or two before attending school again.

Do you live in an area where she can take public transportation to work? Can she find a co-worker with a car with whom she can carpool?

You mention that your husband all of a sudden wants to cut her off because he doesn’t care for you any more? Are you and your husband talking about separating? Do you feel that you and your children are safe in your home environment?

I am sorry that you and your family are going through this.

IS there anyway that your daughter can do the program as a part time student while she continues to work?

What does your income go towards? Are you req’d to hand your check over to your H, and then HE decides how things are being spent? Or have your check auto-deposited and then he makes financial decisions.

I’d be tempted to say that my income is now going to go towards older D’s car issues, insurance and tuition. It would be one thing if you didn’t have any earnings, but you do. So, your H shouldn’t have unilateral say in what gets spent towards your D.

To the OP, the issues you have posted here go far beyond JUST not paying college bills.

Re: family incomes, both parents need to sit down and figure out how bills will be paid. There are two younger children in this marriage also. In my opinion the wife cannot say that all of her income will now pay for college costs for the eldest child.

I think this couple needs to reconcile where their marriage is going. The issues of college costs sound secondary to me. Perhaps a mediator would be helpful. Or a counselor or clergyman.

If your daughter is working what does her $ go toward. Why isn’t she doing the maintenance on her car since she needs it to go to school/work.

I think the issues in your house are deeper than the car maintenance. Perhaps he may think that she should be taking on more of the ownership toward helping to finance her education ( which is not unreasonable for a working person living in your house). How much ate her overhead expenses

I’m so sorry. I agree this goes way beyond paying for college issues but since this is a college financial aid forum, I’ll address just that.

Your D may be able to get loans to help pay for starting now. She can also probably defer for a semester or a year, keep working and wait for #2 to sort itself out:

If you and your H do wind up divorcing or separating, his income will no longer be a factor in her aid eligibility. Only the child support he’d pay for your 2 children with him will count.

Is it worth pointing out this is another post from the “it’s summer. i’m bored. what can I do to entertain myself?” ■■■■■?

No, probably not. Continue as you were.

thanks ladies for your replies! As for the last post i dont know what that means, i only came on here for advice so if that was aimed towards me find someone else to pick on.

My daughter will be 21 in January. As far as me I work part-time 15-20 hrs weekly and i take off when my kids are off from school which is often due to vacations, days off, sickness, summer and have a boss who understands this. My income is very small, i do not ask my husband for money for hardly anything, i buy my own items such as clothes, gas, activities, etc… Whatever i would be able to contribute wouldnt be much of anything after that. Right now just sticking it out for the other 2 kids. Fulltime will be down the road in the near future. I am guessing at this point she will have to wait until either spring semester or another year which really stinks as she got into the school she really wanted to just very bad timing.

If she has to wait, then she needs to request this so she doesn’t have to apply again.

I would suggest deferring for a year so that she has that long to really earn some money. Perhaps you two could coordinate your schedules so that you could work more, too…and she could help with the younger ones when you’re working…ie…if you work days, then maybe she could work nights and weekends.
