Question on school aid app.

The items on aid app. as below:

Types/Sources of Aid Requested:

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Student Loan (rate %)

Student Loans from school (rate 6.8%)

My questions:

what is the rate for Federal Direct Unsubsidized Student Loan?

If we say yes to receive the loans, does it effect the real money the school would give to us? For instance, if we don’t accept any loans, we would get more real money?

How do we find out how much % school would meet our need?

Thank you very much in advance.

I think the unsub Stafford rate is the same.

2. If we say yes to receive the loans, does it effect the real money the school would give to us? For instance, if we don’t accept any loans, we would get more real money?*

No…if that were true, no one would put that they would accept loans. Everyone would like free money over loans.

3. How do we find out how much % school would meet our need?

Sometimes a school’s website says that they meet need. However, some meet need with big loans, so you need to find out.

Contact each school’s financial aid office and ask if they meet need or not.

Don’t look at “average need” met…that won’t tell you anything.

What schools will you be applying to?

Thanks mom2collegekids.

OK that is what I thought. The school is Georgia Tech which doesn’t meet 100% of the need.

If you’re out of state, then you really can’t look at the stats, because OOS students get far less aid than in-state students.

GT does not typically give institutional aid to OOS students. If you qualify for Federal Pell and stafford loans, then you’ll get that. But, don’t expect much more unless you win a competitive scholarship.

Some who have super stats get some grants.

We are OOS (((

So to compare school loan to unsubsidized loan, which one is better? why?

Thank you very much for your info. I love this forum.
