I am going to enter UMCP as a Undeclared Freshman in the Fall. I want to switch to the CMPS. After the UG Admissions Office changes my major to Computer Science, do I get better advising and registration options if I am in CMPS? I still want to be undeclared so I can better prepare for an R.H. Smith application… any thoughts? If y’all need me to clarify, just say so.

Are you going to be a double business/comp. sci major? If not, why do you want to transfer…because you think the advising would be better?

^ I did not get into the Smith School. Which is why I want to re-try as an internal transfer later in my Freshman or Sophomore year.

What I am saying is that if I stay on with the normal, undeclared Freshman advising, will I be at a disadvantage for Comp. Sci. advising + registration? Comp Sc. is a field that I pursue if I do not get into Smith School…

Err if you want to pursue comp sci, declare comp sci.

I imagine advising is better in the comp sci department because it is much smaller than Letters and Sciences or ARHU.

The only reason declaring comp sci would be advantageous for registration purposes is if some comp sci classes you want to take are reserved for comp sci majors only. I do not know if this is the case. You can check at testudo.umd.edu - courses reserved for majors will be specified…if they are unmarked, you’re in the clear.

But again, if you’re interested in comp sci, there’s no reason NOT to declare the major…though there may/may not be some advising/registration benefits. I don’t really see the downside or why you are considering just staying undecided? I do not think that better prepares you…except that comp sci classes are notoriously difficult and you’ll need a strong GPA to get admitted into the biz school ;).
