Hi,

I know I need to complete 60 UC-transferable credits before doing a junior transfer, and that UCs prefer the completion of 60 credits by summer prior to transfer. Does that mean I have to complete 60 credits BEFORE I start my transfer app? Or it means I have to finish 60 credits before I physically enroll in the school. If it’s the latter, how many transferable credits should I complete (to be competitive) at the point of application?

Due to personal reasons I won’t be able to attend a CC this fall but instead I will start classes in Spring 2012. Assuming I take summer classes and a rigorous workload, would it be realistic to enroll at UC in Fall 2013? That would mean 3 semesters for me at CC instead of 4.

Thanks!

If you are planning to enroll at a UC in Fall '13, your 60 transferable units must be completed by the end of Spring '13.

This is possible provided that you have heavy schedules, classes next summer, or have AP credit. However, depending on the CC and your intended major, it may be difficult to get into all the classes you need (including pre-reqs).

My intended major is economics. So the determining factor will be the availability of courses in CC?

Most people will usually have 30-45 units completed when they start writing their applications. So if you want to “catch up” with two-year applicants when it comes time to apply, you should have already taken around 20 units for Spring 2012 and maybe 10 units for Summer 2012. That won’t be easy to do and you’ll probably need to see a counselor to approve you for an “overload” schedule.

Can you start school this coming Winter session instead of the Spring? It would give your schedule some wiggle room.

Another important factor is your placement in English and Math. you need two semesters of college English composition and two semesters of Calculus. you need to take and complete them the semester in which you are writing your applications (a year before your actual transfer), so you will need to take at least English 101 and at least Precalculus for the Fall 2012 semester.

It will also be tough to get classes because you are a new student with 0 units. Try to see if you can join a student services program that can give you priority registration. Some schools offer priority registration to students enrolled in programs such as EOPS, Special Services, Veterans, Honors Programs, etc.
