Question

I took some loans to pay tuition. This morning, i received an email containing this message below. It requires me to enter personal info such as SSN. Is this a spam? I though that we manage all the payments through the financial office.

“U.S. Department of Education has asked us to service one or more of your student loans on their behalf”

Thansk

I’m a parent, not a student, and don’t have any experience with education loans but my guess would be that the e-mail you received is a phishing scam. All you have to do is call the UW financial aid office (or the company/group you took your loan out through) and ask them if the e-mail is legitimate. I assume they can answer your question.

phishing scam.

call before doing anything

Actually, my loan was serviced by a separate organization and they also asked for my SS # online. I verified with both the OSFA and the Department of Education that it was a legitimate group. So, it’s not necessarily a scam. Just make sure to call OSFA to ensure that the specific message you received is real. And even if the group mentioned is the right group for your loans, I’d go directly to their website using the address bar instead of clicking any links in the email. There’s always a chance that the email comes from a person impersonating a company, in which case you can remain safe by going to the company directly.
