So I am taking bio in 8th grade, which is a high school credit. I decided to go to hill school for 9 th grade. Recently I got a B on 3rd quarter . I will have to take bio again in Hill anyways, will the retake grade substitute for my current grade, or will both appear on my transcripts. I really do not want a B as a gradeDoes boarding schools accept high school credits from public schools? Can I ask them to not transfer the grade for bio?
Thank you!
Ask someone at Hill.
@stargirl3 is correct; the question is specific to the school, so you need to ask the school.
You may not have to retake bio at Hill if you are in a true high school bio class now, and a B on your 8th grade report card is no big deal, no worries! Hill will tell you the answer when you sign up for classes. Colleges will likely only see your 9th-12th grades even if you do get credit for some high school classes taken in 8th grade.
In general, boarding schools are much more flexible regarding what classes you take in what year as they try to accommodate kids who are advanced in certain subjects. Hope this helps and congrats!
Can’t comment on Hill- but Exeter would not accept our kids 8th grade- school district supported high school honors biology credit. They had to retake. Colleges accepted it for other child who graduated from public school.
Hill DID take my kid’s 8th grade algebra. They also had a math placement test, so it’s possible that is why. Don’t know about science classes, so, really, I’m not help. Just ask. They are used to lots and lots of questions. Or at least they seemed to be with us.
@gusmom2000 , I think OP wants to know if they put that 8th grade algebra grade on the transcript.
Having recently gone through college applications with my daughter who transferred to her BS in 10th, I am pretty confident no 8th grade grades will be sent to colleges which may well be why some BS want you to repeat the class - so colleges will see you took bio and didn’t skip it when you apply? However, even if they put it on your transcript, receiving a B as an 8th grader in a 9th grade course in an otherwise strong transcript would certainly not raise any eyebrows at even the most elite colleges. Nor do I think an 8th grade mark would be included when they calculate your high school GPA. Some colleges, including most of the CA schools, don’t even consider 9th grade grades.
I doubt that it the reason some, repeat some, BS’s ask students to repeat a class. I think it has more to do with the rigor of the course at a BS vs the previous school.
To be clear, how a HS handles recording MS grades for HS classes will depend on the HS; there is no standard. My own HS listed the classes with no grades; others may differ, which is why I said at the outset that the OP should ask Hill.
