question

say i was accepted at a boarding school for next year (i appled to be a jr in 2007) and then i completed al my requirements and graduated high school by spring. now, im officially a high schol graduate. then would i be a PG at the school i attend? and if so, when applying to college as a sr, would my merits be based on my last school, since i completed that (and am now doing post grad work/gap year)…? eg, my rank and whatnot? bcuz officially, i’m postgrad…

nope…u r not a PG, BS requirements to graduate are much higher…

at hotchkiss, u need AP English (required for juniors), Precalc or above, 3 years of lab science (preferably with AP), US history with a 20 page research paper , art and philosophy credit to graduate.
AP here are also not joke APs in other schools, 90% of the AP class students get 5s on the AP, the rests are 4s…if you can only get a 3 on the AP you would have failed a class here…for example last year’s midterm for AP physics C my teacher gave us a past mechanics test and graded it like the AP, and he didnt even curve it like the AP, while on the real AP, 55% is a 5, oh well, if you scored 55% on that exam, you would have gotten an F…
also, for physics C and econ, most schools do it in 2 years, since it’s 2 APs paper…well at the top BS s we do it within a year…
also, half the kids from honors class jump up and take the AP at the end of the school year and get a 5…
so no…a top BS will not accept most of the “completed requirement” in your old school…
in my first year spanish class my sophomore year, they were 2 kids who took spanish for more than 5 years, took the placement test, got placed in first year class, and actually didnt do well at all…that’s the calibre of academics here…

ok, but i would have a diploma. therefore, i would be doing POST-GRAD work. a PG does not have the same requirements as a a 4-year, 3-year, 2-year, or even 1-year student. most do have some sort of requirement. i would do the 2-year requirements because i would consider myself a 2-year student. also, i would have gone beyond my school’s requirements here (i already am… i’m aping the curriculum for andover’s 4 year requirements)

my question is regarding college admissions after prep admissions, not the intensity of work.

i am saying, you have to pass their placement test to officially place out of their requirement…because most school wont (at least i know hotchkiss wont) accept most AP classes or US history requirement unless you have a 5 on the AP… or pass the previous year’s final at 80%(the placement test)

but yes, you can do that apply to college using your previous high school diploma and say those 2 years are gap year post grad work but that wont do you any good. having a top BS name is much better…i had a 3.1 average at hotchkiss and i got into a top college already…also, unless you fulfill the 2 year requirements at a standard that they want, you wont be able to get the respective BS diploma

…lol you’re making me not want to apply to hotchkiss. no 'fense, but it seems unnecessarily strict in procedure. so my taking US history right now doesnt matter if i can’t get a 5 on the AP?

it’s the same at every school, you have to pass their placement test or have a respective AP score to place it out…top BS’ wont accept the letter grade other school gives you just because they know different schools have different standard…if you are good at it , you will pass the placement tests just fine…if you are not good enough to pass a placement test, it will be beneficial for you to retake anyway :)

oh btw, generally a 5 or a 4,…i dunno why i just typed 5

…okay but i’m not taking an AP US history course. i’m taking a basic US history course. I don’t like US history… I haven’t had course in a long time that bored me this much. Bores the hell out of me. I think world and Euro History classes are more important and interesting and relevent… america is boring! … anyway, isn’t a basic course with an A enough?

Even if you attend a BS as a PG you can choose to get a diploma from the BS if you meet the BS graduation requirements. Most BS will give high school credit from other schools if they feel that the equivalent has been met. (How else do you imagine a repeat or even a non-repeat junior meets the BS graduation requirments?) If you’re going to be paying $40K plus for a year of education, you may as well have a diploma from that school rather than just a PG certificate if you’re academically eligible for the BS diploma. BS graduation requirements often exceed publilc school requirements, but if you have been in an academically acelerated program, you may be able to fulfill the BS requirements in your PG year.

“Most BS will give high school credit from other schools if they feel that the equivalent has been met.”
that’s what i have been trying to say…most schools determine this by giving you a placement test

BS registrars may also use AP and SAT II scores if they are high enough.

If you’re applying for 11th grade, and you get accepted for eleventh grade, then you’ll be in eleventh grade.

hmm, idk id have to agree w/ prettyckitty. but still, think of how strong of a canidate youll look when u apply to college! ^_^

also, keep in mind that the term ‘high school grad’ can sometimes mean different things. ie graduating from a non honors program w/ minimal requirements vs. (ok im a little biased here lol ^^) the IB full diploma program. (in case if anyone is looking into IB full diploma, i know in some cases, particularly w/ the UC’s, kids can skip frosh yr because of all those college credits from IB- just an FYI. ^^)
