question

Whats the purpose of a GC rec? just curious

Because colleges rely on the candor of guidance counselors to help the admissions staff make fair and accurate assessments of applicants.

Also, ideally, the college counselor knows a lot about colleges and has helped you throughout high school to help you with grades, to help you find interesting extracurricular activities, internships, or jobs, and to help you find colleges that match you. Guidance counselors can be useful in explaining why you are a good match for the schools you’re applying to, not just for academics, but also for your personality.

GCs give context to your relative strengths as well as report school metrics like % of kids eligible for free lunch (shows the financial condition of the HS community), % kids who graduate, % kids who go to 4 year schools, # of AP/honors courses offered.

Your GPA and transcript are evaluated in this context. These facts are frankly more common than what dchow states. Usually, the GC knows the student very little.
