Questions about boyfriends IGETC.. please help!

Hi  My boyfriend is a computer science major at a CCC. He has completed all of the computer science classes that our community college offers. He has a 3.4 gpa  i’m not sure what his GPA is in the CS perquisites though, although he has not gotten anything below a B for those classes. We live really close to San Luis Obispo so it has been his objective to go to Cal Poly SLO and he has been following the CSU plan (instead of IGETC.) However, now he is kind of weary, what with his mediocre GPA that he wont get into Cal Poly SLO and is looking to fulfill his IGETC so that he would at least have a chance at some decent UC’s.

The questions we’re trying to figure out is:

1) His counselor told him for “his major” he was not required to take Critical Thinking. I find this very surprising as it is one of the major classes colleges look to…

2) He did not complete his foreign language requirement in high school. That means he would have to take 2 years at CC, which CSU did not require. Is 2 years equivalent to say Spanish 101 AND 102?

He is taking calculus 4 and a hard chemistry course this semester so he’s nervous about enrolling in Spanish 101 and critical thinking, but he only has 2 semesters left! I told him to enroll in them and try to see a counselor asap and drop the courses if possible.

Do any of you have info that would help us out? Thank you!

1) What do you mean by “Critical Thinking”? As far as I know this is not a requirement for IGETC.

2) You do not need 2 YEARS but rather 2 SEMESTERS of a foreign language for the UC system/IGETC completion. So yes, Spanish 101 and 102 would be suffice.

My best advice for you and your boyfriend would be to go and get an IGETC form from your school. Some CCC’s even have this available to download online, so search for that as well. Once you have the IGETC in your hand everything will make much more sense and it is pretty self explanatory.

If you have further questions feel free to ask…

Critical thinking is required in section 1B of IGETC (usually a more advanced writing class) between what is typically freshman composition (1A) and the speech requirement (1C). It’s required for CSU’s and UC’s for IGETC.

Your counselor is technically right though, as critical thinking is not listed as a CS pre req on assist. He COULD transfer without it, but will not have completed IGETC.

Hope that answers your question!

Some CCCs have single-semester classes that meet the IGETC foreign language requirement. You might check around and see if you can find one that does in your area.

2 years of high school Spanish should be equivalent to both Spanish 101 and 102. I took 2 years of high school French and it fulfilled my foreign language requirement for IGETC. Ironically, I never completed my IGETC in the end because I transferred to an OOS 4-year school sooner than I had originally planned to leave my CCC (while originally planning to stay in-state). Haha in the end I got f-ed by the foreign language requirement though because my new school has really tough second language requirements. I’ll be taking a 2nd language from scratch for 4 semesters. If your boyfriend is definitely staying in California’s public university system, he shouldn’t run into any 2nd language requirement issues as long as he completes his IGETC and has a high school transcript to prove that he took Spanish for 2 years.
