Questions About Classes

If I have credit for a class like Rhetoric 306, what classes can I take instead? I’m in EE, but I’m not absolutely positive that I want to major in it – so I’d like to be exposed to as many different things as possible. Can I just take any classes that aren’t restricted? Anybody have suggestion for classes that might give me an idea of other majors?

College Board says

Does this help at all? (Did you choose EE partly because you love math? You might want to try an economics class. And I personally think psychology classes are very interesting!)

You have so many options of classes to take. Check the UT online registrar to look at classes offered this fall. It will tell you if it a class is restricted or open. Look for classes with a lot of sections, because fall semester of freshman year, you will only be offered what is left over after the upperclassmen have all registered.

You will need two U.S. government classes and two U.S. history classes in order to graduate from UT or any Texas college, so those are classes to take early to “get over with” - and you might find you really love history or government classes.

I have another question. Since UT doesn’t take the government AP test, do they take Gov’t AP score + the UT test score and give you credit?

Can someone explain the government class credit?

At orientation you take a short government test and then if you got a good enough score on the Gov AP you will get credit for the first required government class.

I’m not sure how they grade the UT test. I personally knew none of the answers and I still got credit.

^ What did you get on AP Gov’t?

Does UT give you some kind of study material or a topic list for their test?

Texas Government Supplemental Test:

I put all C’s and got credit.

We have never heard of someone with a 4 or 5 on the AP gov test not passing the Texas gov test. We have heard of someone with a 3 on the AP gov test not passing the Texas gov test. Have heard guesses that the standard for how many you need right depends on your AP test score.

The LAH office told out of state kids they should study; that they needed to know the basics of Texas government for this test. I think this would be a good book to study…

…because it is the book used by University of Texas Extension for Gov 105: Texas Gov

"^ What did you get on AP Gov’t?

Does UT give you some kind of study material or a topic list for their test?"

Haha. I don’t remember. I think it was a 4. Maybe a 3.

They don’t tell you much about the test. There isnt really any way to study. The questions are really random and there aren’t very many questions, either.

I wouldn’t try to study or buy stuff for it. It’s seriously no big deal if you do okay on the AP test. I would study for the math subject tests if you need to take them over government.

I took SAT math 1 and got 700~, so gov’t is the only test I’m planning to take.

Thanks nerd855 and midwest mom.

From my understanding, they combine your AP score and your score on the Texas Government quiz together to calculate your score. Thus, the better you do on the AP exam the worse you can do on the Government quiz and still pass. And it’s true, the questions are very random and if you don’t pass, you are not able to retake it – only the CLEP.

Here is the school’s official page on the Texas Government only test: [Texas Government Only Test](http://www.utexas.edu/academic/mec/cbe/txgov.html)

Should you take the Govt. test even if you are not taking the govt. AP test? Can you still get credit for it?

The Texas Government only quiz is for those who have taken the AP exam only, since there is no Texas government information on the AP. This is a graduation requirement.

If you want to try to test out of government, you can take the GOV312L and GOV310L credit by exams. More information can be found at the following links:
