Questions about college

I have some questions…I don’t think some of them have been asked honestly lol.

Anyway,

If you go to a college about 1-2 hours away from home and want to come home on weekends, do you usually pack up all your stuff (clothes, shoes, w/e you bring) and take it home each weekend? How exactly would that work lol, if you don’t want to risk anything being stolen…not that it will. Just asking haha.

Do you guys take your laptops everywhere you go? I’m planning on buying something nice, but if it gets too heavy, we just leave it in the dorm room?

Is college fun? Or atleast better than high school? =D

Do you guys sometimes miss your privacy when dorming?

Thanks!

Why would you pack up all of your stuff? Usually you would just have some things at home and some things at your dorm. Don’t plan to come home every weekend though, or even most weekends. It will eat into your studying time and make it really hard to make friends. Most of the socializing you will do will be in unstructured weekend things that just happen spontaneously around campus or in the dorms, if you’re not around, you’ll miss out on that and look up one day to find out that everyone’s made their friends for the semester and not with you. Go home for one or two weekends a semester, and bring friends with you from school, they will enjoy the chance at home-cooking and free laundry. Otherwise, stay on campus. Study, meet people, go to parties, be independent.

My college was safer than most but I definitely did not take my laptop with me everywhere, I don’t know anyone who does that. If you’re worried about safety, you can get locks that will allow you to lock it to your desk, but the best thing is just to take common sense precautions. Lock your dorm room door. Don’t leave it sitting out in the library unless you’ve asked someone to watch it.

And yes, college is fun. So much fun you just don’t even know yet.

I go to a college across the country from my home, but in my experience:

It depends on how much of your wardrobe you brought to college. I know people who have all their clothes at college and take their clothes home to wash. There is always the small possibility of theft, but few people are going to steal another person’s clothes unless it’s a prank. I still have a lot of clothes at home, so I don’t bother taking my clothes home for breaks. At least at my school, doing laundry is pretty easy, so there is little need to bring stuff home to wash unless you want to. Out of the 2.5 hours a week I spend doing laundry, for 90 minutes I’m back in my room on my laptop waiting for my laundry to be done. I agree, don’t go home every weekend. Some of my favorite times on campus have occured on weekends.

I live in a suite situation where I have my own room, but I only take my laptop to class when I have a presentation or a long wait between classes. Otherwise, it’s in my dorm room which seems to be the case with others on campus, including those with roommates.

People say this a lot, but college is what you make of it. Is college all that I expected? Not always. It is a lot better than high school, IMHO. There will be difficult classes, people you don’t get along with, and probably times you will miss home, but there are new people to meet, new activities to do, and generally a lot more freedom to do what you want to do.

People that share a dorm room will have more detailed insight, but there actually is a lot of privacy when dorming if you want it, it just may be outside your room or in another part of campus. If you’re used to having 1,000 sq. feet of a house all to yourself, then yes, it will be a change. My dorm has a lot of study rooms/lounges to go to when I want to be out of my room and there is always going out for a walk around campus or finding a nice quiet corner of the library to sit in.

Just a tip: buy a smaller laptop (avoid the 15" dell inspirons, etc.,) so you can take notes comfortably in class. That won’t really be applicable for science/math classes, but it might work for social science/humanities with lots of writing.

if you take your laptop everywhere you go, then you need to get a life

my freshman year, i used to go home every other weekend. I would usually carry some outfits, shoes and carried any identification(bank cards,id,etc). I did not have a computer and I would take pictures or mark where my stuff was so i knew if something was moved.

My first college was similar to my high school experience(not a good one) but the one i go to now is so much better. There is always something to do hanging out with friends parties, school events. There is more liberty but it comes with great responsibility.

I recently have a privacy issue since i am living in a single my walls are so thin i can hear a conversation from my bath roommate or from the other rooms. Overall you get accustomed to it.

I go to college about 1 1/2 hours away from home.

When I go home for the weekend, I take whatever clothes I want, whatever work I need, toiletries, my wallet and my laptop. Simple. I never worry about anything being stolen…I lock my door! Oh, and regarding going home: I disagree with Smithie. You can go home every weekend and still have a great college experience and still be involved. I wouldn’t suggest it, but I definitely think that once or twice a semester is hardly anything, especially when you live so close. Last semester I think I went home about 5 times and it was perfect.

My laptop comes with me to some of my classes, and to the library. When I don’t need it, it stays in my room. I got a 14" one that weighs less than 5.5lbs, so carrying it around isn’t a problem because it’s not too big or heavy.

I love college! I have a lot of fun, but that’s because I’ve gotten really involved on campus and have made lots of awesome friends. College is way better than high school ever was.

Yeah…privacy can be an issue. I live in a double like most people on campus, and it does suck sometimes because you can’t always be alone when you want to be…but you deal and you find places to retreat to and such.
