Questions about Emory

1) If I can’t visit (can’t, not don’t want to), what else can I do to demonstrate interest? I don’t want them to think I’m not interested.

I am currently contemplating applying Early Decision to Emory and have a few questions.

1) Chances!

IBDC
Rank: Top 10% possibly, definitely top 12%
GPA UW: 3.8
GPA W: 4.38

Most rigorous
I got 1 F freshman year (non-core class) and a C in 8th grade. Everything else is an A.

SAT: 2130 - 750 CR, 620 M, 760 W (will retake to get Math to 700+)
SAT II’s: will take Bio and Chem, possibly Math II

EC’s

Pre-Med Club - Founder and President
Young Republicans - Vice President
Theater 270 hours, love it alot
Creative writing
Robotics, went to nationals, etc
National Honor Society
Mu Alpha Theta
Key Club

Not too many clubs but I am heavily involved in all of the above.

Volunteering:

Community center
Dog shelter
Museum

Work experience

Am Arab-American, father was a political refugee from Hussein regime

3) How good is the financial aid? Is it unlikely to be able to graduate with <50K in debt?

I plan on applying, if I indeed do, as a biology or biochem major and going the pre-med route

Hey! So if you can’t visit, you should order their Emory DVD (it’s free) from their website. Also, try to make it to one of those Emory visit you events in your region. If you can’t do either of these, try and get in touch with your regional counselor. Ask them for more info on your plan of study and more info on campus life. Maybe you don’t need that info, but if they see that you’re more interested in learning more about Emory, it’ll help.

As far as your F goes, could you explain why you got an F? Although your gpa is fine, I think they might be a little weary. it is an F, anyway.

You should apply ED to show the most interest. Essentially, I think your chances of getting in are high if you apply ED. Your GPA and test scores make you an applicant worthy of admission but only if you show interest.

Financial aid-- is great! Are you low-income? Upper-middle? Emory will more than likely take care of you in that regard.

A question for you-- where are you from? If you’re from an underrepresented geographical location, your chances look better. If from GA, your chances are neither decreased nor increased.

Good luck and I hope I helped!

If you can, retake the SAT or ACT. Your math score is a little low. I think our bottom percentile is at 670 or 680.

Thanks!

The F is a long story. I am going to explain it on the app and explain that I am now much smarter about my work ethic as my transcript shows. I had straight A’s freshman year except for that, and straight A’s sophomore and junior year while taking an extremely rigorous courseload (doubling up on HL sciences). My junior year gpa is 4.875.

Will Emory notice the “upward trend”?

Also I will have excellent recommendations. 1 from my bio teacher, who will have taught me three years by the time I apply; one from my Chinese teacher who taught me 2 and is also the head of NHS at my school; and one from my theater teacher, two years’ teaching me.

I do plan on re-taking the SAT’s to get my math up

And I’m from Texas. I don’t know if there are many Texas applicants, but that’s where from.

My income level is 15K a year. I know, I’m really embarrassed. But it is what it is, my father died in Iraq and my mother has to support the family. I just know that my kids will never have to worry about financial aid.

It’s good that you’ll write about your F to them.

as far as finaid, if you get in, you’ll prob get a full ride considering your income level.

i’m so sorry about your dad, btw. May he RIP.

and as far as texas goes, we have a lot of texas apps but not too many, i don’t think it will affect nor harm you.

Good luck and hope to see you here next year!

they will most def notice the trend! in fact my grades for instance were better as the years progressed, and i’m here!

I highly recommend reaching out to your regional rep as soon as possible. In addition I recommend continually emailing your regional rep once every 2-3 weeks with genuine questions. By the time your regional rep has gotten to your application he’ll/she’ll most likely recognize you by name. ;)

That’s a great idea. How can I find out my regional rep? And what sorts of questions? I figure asking questions that are simply answered on the Emory website or similarly readily available places would be annoying more than anything.

The bottom math score is 650 (and I doubt it’ll be higher for the incoming class. Seriously, normally it’s the verbal score that adjusts upward or downward). I suppose it could help to retake the SAT, but since like 25% are below 650 in math and your verbal puts you in 75%, you may be okay. I suppose another issue might be expectations and competition regarding you being Arab-American (really sucks, but could be a reality), so in that context, it may be better to have both scores in the middle-50 (my scores were similar to yours, one in the 75% and one right on the beginning of the 25%. For some reason I can do calculus, but was not up to SAT algebra and trig. that day lol), than one in the 75% and one in the 25% range, but I get the feeling Emory does very holistic admissions now b/c of too many people w/high SATs. Basically it won’t auto-admit or auto-reject based upon an SAT score. They simply assess who can handle the work (a very broad range of scores and GPAs), and see who they want to shape the class with. And as probably already mentioned, they want to shape it w/people who may really want to attend here, not those who will attend as a last resort top 20. And for some reason they can tell if you’re the latter (which is probably how many extremely, otherwised qualified students, get rejected)

Also, I really don’t know why there would be a pre-med club in HS lol. Goodness gracious!

Okay, I’m looking at the Emory site and the regional rep for Texas is not listed. I see that it says admissions counselor, and Texas is one of the states…but no name, no link, unlike the others. Anyone care to help out?
