Hello,
I am planning to apply for grad school. I am quite lost as to what I want to do next. The problem with that is time, I am 25 years and I don’t have a stable job. I recently graduated with a BA in English and have a 3.1 gpa. I want to get a stable job. Any suggestions?

If you’re lost as to what to do, do not apply to graduate school.

Graduate school is intense, specialized training in one particular specialty… at the point of the Ph.D, you’re essentially supposed to become the world’s foremost expert in one particular, laser-focused area (your dissertation.)

Applying to graduate school requires, in most cases, a Statement of Purpose essay which outlines your reasons and goals for pursuing the graduate degree. If you write in that essay, “I’m applying to grad school because I don’t know what I want to do,” you will be rejected 100% of the time.

Do I have a chance for grad school though? Are there any other routes that I can take?

No, you don’t have a chance, because you have no idea why you want to go to graduate school. That comes first, before anything else.

You could have a 4.0 from Harvard and be rejected if your SOP is “I’m lost as to what I want to do next and I want a stable job.”

Do you even know what subject you want to pursue in graduate school?

If you want to get a stable job, find a stable job. Another degree is not necessarily going to help you to find a stable job. Start doing some serious job searching.

Yes!! Go to a place like [WGU Online University | Online Degree Programs, Accredited Bachelor’s and Master’s](http://www.wgu.edu) and get a Masters in Education with a Teaching Endorsement, then you can get a stable job teaching Jr High or HS English.

I second XaviFM. Or try to become an officer in the military, go to an inexpensive law school, move in with your parents and volunteer, … I taught high school for two years then started grad school. I am a career changer–BA in math seeking MS in structural engineering; I like looking at bridges, dams, curvy highways, ships, cooling towers, … I probably would have been more hesitant to attend grad school if I did not have the post 9-11 gi bill to pay for it. You’re young; you have plenty of time to figure it out.
