questions about the essay

heys

i was just in the process of writing up my extended essay, and i thought quoting stanzas from certain songs before paragraphs, to create a mood for the reader before he starts the paragraph. i read somewhere on cc though that adcoms didnt like seeing quotes in personal statements. is there any truth to that?

Thanks in advance

At Chicago they want to see well written essays that show one can handle ideas. However one can do that would, in my estimation, be acceptable.

I don’t know how it works for essays, but I used a quote to open just about every paper I wrote in college. It was sort of my personal trademark (that only I knew about). I sometimes spent half as much time looking for good quotes as I did writing the paper. I never had a negative reaction from a professor, and I had lots of positive comments. YMMV.

as long as the quotes have a purpose and they tie in creatively, I think that’s good. But quotes before EVERY paragraph? Might become a bit much. Just make sure it’s not too stop-and-go for the reader.

hey thanks everyone.
