At risk of revealing my identity… I am a third year Business Economics major, Accounting and Spanish minors, and Regents and Alumni scholar. I have also studied abroad, I love UCLA sports, am involved on campus, receive need-based financial aid, have lived in the dorms and apartments etc, etc. If anyone has questions about any of these categories or UCLA in general please ask away!

(If anyone I know read this they would definitely know who I am haha!)

Where did you study abroad?
Chances we bring home the national championship in football next season?

I did a travel study program through UCLA for management courses for my major/minor in Madrid and Barcelona! I’m also studying abroad through UCEAP this fall. UCLA has its own “travel study” programs (http://ieo.ucla.edu/travelstudy/programs) and all UC students can participate in UCEAP (http://eap.ucop.edu/)

According to Vegas, our odds are 18-1 on the low side but up to 12-1 which is a 8% chance! :)

Awesome! I will be traveling to Spain in the near future (probably not through a UC-sponsored program though), I could use some advice.

Hundley for Heisman! Even when he leaves we should be set for the next few years (don’t know if you’ve been following, but we’ve nabbed the top QB recruit and top TE recruit for the class of 2015 and hopefully we can get Snoop Dogg’s son too, he’s a WR)

Do you believe Business Econ is a good major for someone who wants to focus on Accounting (read that it is more econ related)? I heard it is hard to get into the Accounting minor, is this true? Any tips / things you wish you knew beforehand for UCLA in general and business econ as well? I know this is a lot of questions but appreciate it if you could answer!

Business Economics is Economics combined with Accounting so it is a great major to have if your main goal is the accouting minor because the class requirements overlap a lot. If you plan it right, if you are a Business Economics major, it only requires a few more additional accounting classes to complete the minor. Of course both the Bus Econ major and the Accounting minor are difficult to get into. Accounting is difficult because it requires at least a B in Mgmt 1A and 1B (requirements are here: http://www.anderson.ucla.edu/programs-and-outreach/accounting-minor).

However if you don’t like Econ at all and would rather major in a different major I would highly recommend you do that! For me, I am not nearly as interested in Econ as other majors so I wish I had chosen a different major with the accounting minor instead.

My biggest tip for econ classes would be going to a good TA’s discussion section because you can attend any discussion. A good TA will make the material so much easier to understand! Tips for accounting classes would be to study a lot and really understand the WHY behind the concepts for Mgmt 1A and 1B and then it becomes easier to slack off in later classes because you’ll have a more intuitive grasp of accounting.

UC-Dreams feel free to ask about Spain! A lot of my friends have studied abroad all over Spain through UCEAP, travel study, and ISA (non-UC program).

And yes I follow recruiting and am so excited about Josh Rosen! Did you hear he as a 4.8 GPA :O. #1 TE is alright too. ;)

We still have Asiantii Woulard who was the #1 dual threat QB in his class and who’s apparently made some strides under the tutelage of Hundley. Should be a good competition between him and Rosen for the starting job once Hundley leaves. That’s crazy, he also considered Cal, Stanford, and Michigan which are great academic schools as well and I wonder if he’ll stay however long it takes to get his degree.

We didn’t have a true TE last year…I miss the days when we had Fauria, he was unstoppable in the red zone.

How math intensive is the Bus Econ Major ?

Bus Econ is Econ and Accounting. Econ 1 and 2 are not very math based besides solving systems of 2 (simple) equations. After that, all econ classes are very math based and theoretical. Beginning in Econ 11 (the third econ class) you will use the fundamentals from calculus (derivatives, integrals) as well as multivariable calculus (partial derivatives, Lagrangian). It is not as math intensive as a math class but basically all the econ theory is based in mathematical proofs and equations.

Accounting, despite what you might think, is not math based at all really. The most complicated math concept you’ll ever do is taking a number to the power of something, and usually all you do is add, subtract, multiply and divide. The ideas behind accounting are more conceptual and logic based rather than math, proofs, equations and the like.

However, I did take Math 32A here at UCLA and let me tell you that was WAY WAY harder than any econ class I’ve ever taken. Econ is definitely not as hard as pure math. Also the curve is nicer than in south campus classes.

I recently got accepted as an Alumni Scholar for UCLA. What are some of the benefits of being an Alumni Scholar other than the scholarship of $1,000 - $4,000 a year?

How has being an Alumni Scholar benefited you in terms of networking, class enrollment, housing, etc?
Do you get access to possible internships because you are a scholar? Do you get priority class enrollment?

@add1line @petaandpita You guys are such over-achievers! Now that both of you have had experience as an Alumni Scholar, I was wondering how does Alumni Association disburse the additional grant besides the scholarship itself? Are they generous about it? (I am asking because I still have huge unmet financial need ) :((
Besides, would you recommend a dorm, a university apartment, or a regular apartment to a transfer student?
Thanks so much!
