Hi, I was talking to a parent last night whose daughter is in professional school and has a BS in BioChem from UT Austin.

I am interested in current student’s or recent grad’s views of the quality of instruction and degree planning for undergraduates, specifically. This parent indicated a perceived weakness in the quality of instruction and in advice/planning.

My roommates are all Biochem majors. The Biochem profs are pretty bad, (one of them was failing Biochem I badly and dropped while another probably took a failing grade). You’ll find that most professors are not there to teach; they’re there to do their research. They just have to teach b/c it’s probably part of their contract. I’ve had horrible CNS profs (Genetics for one, Ochem and Multivariable Calc weren’t that bad).

As for advising/planning, I have heard they’re ok, not bad at all.

Thanks, X. I was hoping to hear that her experience was perhaps not an indication of the CNS typical experience. As her father said, you don’t spend thousands of dollars so your kid can teach themselves. He has a point there. Hmmmmm. No one expects spoon feeding of content in a college environment. My son intends to major in math and his goal is grad school and having a math degree myself and knowing how one concept builds upon the next, it is important for your professor to be able to clearly convey the material. Also should be willing to take questions and not treat his/her teaching duty as secondary. Appreciate your input.

There are always office hours for the TA and the prof if your son is having trouble understanding concepts. He just needs to choose the best prof available from looking at Myedu since there are a lot of bad ones…

busybusy23 - I didn’t take Intro Bio I & II here so I don’t know. I do know that whenever (or if) you take Genetics, you’re going to be screwed if you’re not an upperclassman. Dang that class sucked.

xcellerator, could you please explain why someone would be screwed in Genetics if they’re not an upperclassman? haha I’m a freshmen and will be taking it with Finklea next semester…

^ Registering for classes is by class status/hours. The only Genetics class with a decent prof is Bierner, and almost all juniors take the spots. All the other profs are not good, especially Takata (omg I got raped in that class).
