Questions on Med Admissions and Various Specialties

PSedrishMD, a few questions:

DO universities generally show preference to their own undergraduates when accepting students into their med schools? I just got in (yesterday  ) to the University of Florida, home of Shands Hospital, and I would love to stay for my medical education.

How many years after med school are there to be come a pediatrician? same question for emergency medicine.

Can you give me some pros and cons of the two fields? I’ve read books about both, but I would love some direct information. I love children, but emergency medicine is also appealing because my entire family consists of paramedics, firefighters, etc. and as a kid I always considered them all heros.

Anyways, thank you for the time you put forth, for everyone on this board.

-lacey

lacey:…congrats!

 1. Not a lot of preference to their own grads.
 2. Peds 3 years; ER 3-4 years.
 3. Compare and contrast them? Wow…you know football?? It’s like comparing an offensive guard (=the peds guy: plodding along, day after day, needed but rarely appreciated; no glory) and a kick returner (=the ER guy: action–inaction, sparkling! fumble??)

you could also consider pediatric emergency medicine (pem)…
btw PSedrish MD how long is the pem fellowship?
