Questions regarding McNutt

My son will be living in McNutt this fall. Are the rooms carpeted? Is the A/C sufficient or should he bring a fan, too? Is there room for a futon if the beds are lofted?

Also, what bank would you recommend that has ATM’s readily available on campus as well as a brick and mortar location within walking distance? I noticed that McNutt has an ATM but which banks are they for (to avoid additional fees)?

Thanks!

-The rooms are tile, but have almost a wall to wall area rug that is more than sufficient. A rug would just be something else he has to clean.

-The A/C is definitely sufficient, a fan may be useful if your son gets hot easily, however, they tend to just take up extra space

-There isn’t really room for a futon due to the layout of the rooms (beds get lofted to the right of the door, built in closets/storage on the left wall, desks along the back corners/window

-Chase is probably the best bet in terms of banks. There’s an ATM for them in the union, as well as a brick and mortar bank on 3rd Street. I believe the only ATM in McNutt is an IU Credit Union ATM. Bank of America has no ATMs on campus, the only one is in the mall. 5/3 has an ATM in the Union and a brick and mortar location on 3rd Street as well. Those are the only 2 large banks in Bloomington

The ATM in McNutt isn’t an IU credit union ATM, its just an IU ATM that takes an extra dollar every time you use it, in addition to any fees from your bank. It works if you’re desperate. Chase or IU Credit Union is best, they have ATM’s at the Union and other places on campus. IU credit union has no checking fees, I think Chase might. I have IU credit union and its pretty convenient. I’ve never had any problems.

Sometimes in the hottest days of September the A/C feels a little weak, but overall I don’t think you need a fan. You can fit a futon, but not easily. It’d take up a lot of floor space.
Also, I think the newer buildings of McNutt (Bryan?I can’t remember) are carpeted, but I don’t remember too well.

There is room for a futon. I bunked my beds and put them against the wall with the door and had my TV on top of my fridge and microwave against the window and a futon in the middle and it worked pretty well. It was slightly cramped I guess, but it was fine. You will never be able to say your dorm is spacious anyway.

My friends across the hall lofted theirs in an L shape and put the futon underneath one bed and the bookcase that comes with the room and their fridge under the other and that worked really well because it left a lot of open space in the middle of the room. However, if you do that, you have to put the standard bed frames someplace. For them, they brought them home because they lived close. You can usually get away with putting them in the trash room, which is what I did with my extra piece.

I think I read that to use the IU Credit Union one has to be an Indiana resident so he will probably have to go with Chase or 5/3.

We will wait on the futon to see if one will fit or not.

Thanks for your help.

I am not an Indiana resident and I use the credit union. I have a basic debit account just for cash.

You do not need to be an Indiana resident to join IU Credit Union if you are an IU student.

One other local bank is Old National. Monroe Bank very recently merged with Old National. Monroe Bank had several ATM locations near campus, on 10th street across from Teter and a block off campus on Kirkwood, near College Mall. I don’t know if ONB has kept these open. There was/is also a location on Kirkwood.

As a local, we recently switched from Monroe Bank (ONB) to IU Credit Union. Our banking needs are a bit complicated, but we have been very happy with IU Credit Union so far.
