1.) I was admitted to Michigan, but my first semester grades were lower than normal. I finished with a 3.22 with a C in Accelerated Physics and a C+ in AP Calc. These classes are genuinely difficult for me, and I don’t feel that there’s a whole lot I can do to perform much better this semester. If I repeat my last semester, will Michigan rescind my admission (keep in mind that I have never been good at math or science to begin with and Michigan admitted me with more than one B- in these subjects)?

EDIT: I believe my UMich GPA last semester would actually be a 3.16 and potentially even lower if they don’t include theology in calculating GPA.

2.) Also, I was looking at the academic calendar on Michigan’s website, and I noticed there are three terms: fall, winter, and spring. I was wondering whether Michigan operates under a trimester system (I was under the impression that it was semester). Also, I noticed that the spring term doesn’t end until around June 20 or so, and was wondering if any students thought such a schedule was a disadvantage.

1) There’s a chance they might ask you about it. Usually they just want to check to make sure you’re not slacking off at the end of Senior year. You can probably just say it’s material you’ve always struggled with.

2) Spring term here isn’t like spring term for schools on a trimester system. Summer break is divided into Spring term and Summer term, and you can classes from a limited selection either in a half term or the combined Spring/Summer term.

Michigan will not rescind the offer unless you have another very poor semester. Michigan may, however, ask you to explain your two Cs. My advice to you is to shoot for straight As and Bs your final semester in school and you should be alright.

As far as Michigan’s academic calandar, it is divided into two main terms (Fall and Winter) and two half-terms (Spring and Summer). Most students only take classes during the Fall and Winter terms. Michigan does indeed run on a Trimester system, but students generally only take classes during two of the three terms.

Jaybot, Michigan would obviously ask you for a written explanation. So it will clearly not be done over the phone. Whether it is done by regular mail or just plain email varries from case to case. I would not worry about that for now. Focus on this semester and on getting your grades back to an acceptable level.
