I dont know if this has alredy been brought up but I was just wondering if anyone could tell me about Greek life at Udel and all the different sororities? Also, I talked to someone I know who goes to UD and she said it’s really expensive… if someone could elaborate on the costs that would be appreciated! And lastly what is rushing like? is there hazing involved? I was thinking about rushing, but I’m not sure — insight would be much appreciated thanks!

Your questions would require several pages to respond to completely. First of all I would suggest that you go the the UDEL wedsite, go to the undergraduate section, then go to student organizations, and then go to sororities/fraternities. This site gives info and policies/regulations regarding all the accredited/recognized sororities at UD. I believe there are about 15 sororities at UD, some of them have residences, a number do not. The web site unfortuneately does not include dues/costs. My daughter just graduated from UD last Sat… She was a member of a sorority for 3 years. Her sorority (Alpha Phi) does have a house in the center of campus near Trabant. She stayed at the sorority house for her sophomore year. The cost for room and board (they have a chef who prepares evening meals Sun. thru Thurs.) for the year was not significantly different from living in a dorm and getting the required dining plan. In addition, if I recall correctly, the cost of dues was about $600.00 per semester. She also had to pay these dues in her Jr. and Sr. years but the dues allowed her go to some evening meals along with a number of other things. Obviously each sorority has its own dues/fees/benefits. Sororities at UD, unlike fraternities, are not allowed to hold open parties in their houses. The Rush process is somewhat difficult to describe. In a nutshell the sororities hold a number of interactive sessions over time where girls are invited back until a final pledge class is identified. Sorority life does take up a lot of time but if you budget your time well it should not be a problem. My daughter did not report any significant problems with hazing as a pledge. She felt that being a member of a sorority did enrich her overall college experience. Hope this info is helpful.

mwallenmd: Thanks for the info on Alpha Phi! I was an Alpha Phi (at Northwestern) and my D will be rushing (probably) at UD. Would be pretty cool if she liked the APhis!

udel0221: Are you on the FB page for UDel 2014? There’s an upperclassman (Leah) who started a discussion forum; if you ask her about Greek Life on UD, she can give you info. As previously mentioned, there’s basic info online also.

Does anyone know how much the dormroom carpets are/ were last year? The vendor doesn’t have any information on their site yet.

Also, does anyone know why the kids get rid of them every year? Wouldn’t you take it home for the following year?

Don’t remember how much they cost but I do remember you could do better elsewhere.

I wonder if you’ve seen what a dorm carpet look like after a year - frequently not worth toting home! DD got a nice one colorful from IKEA. Some dorms are carpeted, so you may not need one. Also, how you set up the furniture can make a difference about how big a carpet you get.
