I was working on the Deerfield application and it asks if a parent is an alumni of an independent school. If it isn’t Deerfield (to give me legacy status) why would it matter? Mom did attend a BS, but it wasn’t any of the schools I am applying to. In fact, it isn’t even open anymore.

Also, while she is a graduate of one BS, she attended 2 different BS. Should I put them both or just the one she graduated from?

I have seen this sort of question, even asking if ANY relative attended BS. I am guessing they use it as one more light shining on the student and family–is the family familiar with BS? Is there family loyalty to another school? Is the family pleading poverty even after the benefit of a BS education? For diversity purposes schools would want some students with no family history of BS. Who knows what other motives schools have in asking this question?

As to your second question, if it were me, I would only put down the school your mother graduated from, but I think it would be fine to list both schools too.

I don’t think it’s a big deal but I wondered about this too when D was aplying.
