Why did the French come to expand in the America, during the time of America’s founding?

trapping/trading- they most lived in rural river valleys west of the british colonies, and their motives for settlement were mostly economic. They were known as the most humane to the native americans, because their livelihood depended on trading with them, so they treated them with a lot more respect than the British and Spanish. They never had many large permanent settlements, mostly forts and that kind of thing, because their settlers were mostly people finding fur to sell/trade, etc.
