Quick Info about the Computer Centers :)

Hey all!

With move-in day rapidly approaching, I’d like to re-introduce you to the computer centers for student housing residents. I’m not sure how much they talked about the computer centers during orientation, but hopefully this will clear any questions you may have about them…

About the computer centers:

There are four computer centers:
Segundo: Under Miller Hall
Tercero: Next to the Tercero Main building (below and outside the DC)
Castilian: Upstairs between the ASD and the old DC
Emerson: Outside of the main lounge

As long as you are a resident, you will be able to use any of these computer centers regardless of which area you live in. I’m not exactly sure yet, but I think all computer centers might be open 24/7 except on certain occasions. I’ll let you all know if this turns out not to be the case.

The computers are there mainly for academic purposes, but as long as you aren’t looking at controversial or graphic things, feel free to use them for leisure purposes.

You get 250 free prints, and you will be able to print double-sided to essentially get 500 free prints! These prints are black and white only… we do not have color printers :(

There is a scanner in each location, but no fax machine or copy machine.

The computers are running Windows 7, and the Winterms (the small mini-computer boxes that you will see) are running Windows Server 2008. We just got them in and hopefully they’ll be hassle-free throughout the year.

If you want to use our printers to print something off your computer, you will probably want to email it to yourself and print it off one of our computers. There isn’t a way to directly print off your own computer.

Every time you log in, you will see a little window with a balance on it. For you guys, it will show “$2.50”. This ONLY means that you have 250 prints. It will deduct a penny off every print you use. It looks like you owe money, but you really don’t! I swear! Haha.

We do have hole punchers and staplers, but from last year’s experience, people have taken them and/or we ran out of supplies and it took us a while to restock… so apologies in advance if we run out during an inconvenient time :(

About RCAs:
There are 8 of us total, and we are here to help you with your computer problems! Whether it’s a virus, router configuration or you just need general help, feel free to ask us. However, we can’t really help you with hardware installation (hard drives, RAM, graphics cards, etc) because of liability issues.

An RCA will always be on-call everyday, and you can find the hours and phone number on the website [UC Davis Student Housing: Residential Computing Support](http://housing.ucdavis.edu/computers/rescomp_support.asp)

You’ll see two of us for the first week, but once school starts, only one RCA will be working at any given time – so even if there isn’t one in your area, give us a call because we’re somewhere!

Lastly…
DON’T FORGET TO REGISTER YOUR COMPUTERS!!!
If you haven’t done so already, visit [UC Davis Student Housing: Registering Your Computer](Wired Network Access | UC Davis Student Housing and Dining Services) and follow the instructions particular to computer you plan on using in the dorms :)

If you choose not to register your computer before moving in, you can definitely do it in the computer center any time.

If you have any questions about the computer center or anything related, feel free to ask! Spread the word if you’d like as well… I’ve noticed that Fall quarter is pretty slow probably due to the lack of knowledge about the computer center’s benefits.

Marz, you are magic! Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the info.

I was wondering what kind of campus jobs exist in IET and the like. I’ve worked as a web designer for almost four years, and I have skills in networking and am good with computers in general. If there are student positions available, what level of expertise do they expect, and is there training?

marz, are you sure it’s 250 prints? On the website it says you get 30 free prints and are charged 11 cents a page for 31 or more pages printed.

[IET: Printing in the Computer Rooms](http://clm.ucdavis.edu/rooms/printing/)

Are these the only public computers available for use/printing on campus?

250 free prints per quarter at residential computer centers. (marz mentions the 4 centers) [UC Davis Student Housing: Computer Centers](Computer Centers | UC Davis Student Housing and Dining Services)

30 free prints per quarter at the other computer rooms around campus. [Computer Rooms Available](http://clm.ucdavis.edu/rooms/available/)

KevinM, it sounds like you have a good personal background for a student position in the IT field. Your best bet would be to visit [UC Davis - Student Employment Center](http://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/Jobs/) and search for any on-campus jobs that fit your skill level. As for my job, we start hiring in the Spring quarter, so there’s a long way to go before we accept applicants :]. I’m sure your skills will land you a decent job on campus! And as for training, it really depends on the job. For my job, there is definitely training, even though a lot of us are pretty technically skilled. Training should be more for learning the procedure/protocol of how to do things, so it never feels redundant.

Indianjatt: himerus is correct. You get 250 prints in the dorm computer centers, and 30 free prints from IET computer labs (which are scattered around campus)

chillit: There are IET computer labs scattered around campus. You can find out which labs are open for general use here: [IET : Classrooms & Computer Rooms](http://iet.ucdavis.edu/rooms/) . These labs have 10-minute stations and sit-down stations. The 10-minute stations are designed for students who need to print something (like an essay) right before class starts, while the sit-down stations are for those who need to be on a computer longer. As Indianjatt stated, you only get 30 free “grace” prints. If you go over, they will charge you 11 cents per page INCLUDING the 30 grace prints you used… so be careful!

Some new things I’ve learned during training: Right now we’re having issues with the servers, so we have downgraded back to 2003 for now. What does that mean for you all? Nothing much… it just doesn’t look as fancy. Haha.
Also, if you are living in Potter, Campbell or Wall, there may be an issue where you have to change your passphrase, or add an additional character in order to be able to log into ResNetX. Don’t worry too much about it right now. There will be tons of staff available to help if you have connectivity issues.

How much are printings after you use up the 250 at the comp. labs? I heard from a few others that if you run out, and ask the techs, they can give you another 100 for free, but I’m not sure.
