Quick question about math courses and calculators

We have to bring our own calculators, right? (my high school always provided the calculators so I need to know if I’m gonna have to buy one.)

Thanks.

I read somewhere that Duke Math (at least 103) does not use
calculators.

you may or may not need calculators for tests, but you’ll still need one, if for no other reason but to check yourself on homework problems. it also helps to be able to quickly graph things in the intro calc classes. go with a ti-83/84. you’ll of course also need it if you take any phys/chem/egr/econ classes, maybe others

…umm get a ti89 b/c it does everything… and no math courses at duke allow the use of calc on exams

That’s not true at all.

You’ll probably need a calculator for a good amount of classes so definitely pick one up.

mmmm…HP 48…Nothing says “calc wizard” like Reverse Polish Lisp…

Here’s the info from the Math Department for MTH 25 through 103:
http://www.math.duke.edu/first_year/calculator.html

Note for engineering that you really need to have a calculator that can do complex numbers and that can switch among complex notations. Solving polynomials would be nice, too.

LOL, Egr93! Back in the day, we called it “reverse Polish notation.” Hadn’t thought of that in ages!

And I thought my calculator was hot stuff because I could play Battleship on it.
