Quick Question about Rank

<p>Is there that much of a difference between rank 1 and 2/3…do schools value valedictorians, or is it like the SAT’s, as in after a certain mark, the adcom starts looking at yoru EC’s and other factors. Thanks</p>

As long as your GPA is high, it doesn’t matter if you’re 1, 2, or 3.
Unless #1 has a 4.0 and #2 has a 3.5
Then yes, that’s a big difference haha ;]</p>

<p>In most contexts, I think that your rank expressed as a percentage of the graduating class will be more important than your number-in-class. For an obvious example: an adcom can infer less from someone being 3rd in a graduating class of 50 than from being 3rd in a class of 500. If you’re in the top 5% at a good school, that’s quite an accomplishment and you should not worry about one or two “slots.”</p>

<p>Basically, as long as you stay within the top 5%-10% of your class, you should be fine. GPA far outweighs rank, and I know at my school the difference between each rank, especially as the ranks are higher, is so minimal it can almost be negligible because the GPA’s are so close together.</p>

<p>cory123: There is a breakdown on both websites regarding accepted students. It turns out I was incorrect about Brown, Valedictorians and Salutatorians are both accepted at a rate of 26%. At Penn however, Vals are admitted at a rate of 38% versus 33% for Salutatorians–a pretty significant difference.</p>
