Quick Question about the AP Bio exam

Quick question for you all. Is the exam heavy on Plant Biology? So far I’ve taken a few CB practice tests, but have not found any questions of the sort. I’m pretty sure that CB removes a lot of material from these tests, so I dont entirely trust them.
This question is mainly directed for those who have taken the exam before, but if you haven’t, please feel free to answer

Thanks!

I took the exam last year (I only made a 2, though), but from what I can remember, there really wasn’t a lot of plant stuff on it. My school district missed about 40 days of school, which made my AP class unable to do a lot of the experiments, and my teacher had to skip over different sections (plants being one of them). I would look over plant anatomy (IE, what is the function of the roots, stems, leaves? What is the xylem and phloem?) Know the difference between animal and plant cells. The exam last year, from what I can remember, isn’t too heavily focused on plants, so you should be good. The 2014 short answer questions were released on collegeboard, and I think one of the long response questions was about plants, but I can’t exactly remember.

There’s a link to the short/long questions from last year.

Happy studying!

@tremndose‌ Thank you so much. That was really helpful

@futuredoctor2028 No problemo. I also should mention that my school, having realized that we were way behind schedule, bought my class AP Biology Barron’s books, which were EXTREMELY helpful. They were like the textbook, but got straight to the point. Plus, they were a lot easier to read and comprehend. I highly recommend it for reviewing and summarizing unfamiliar territory.

@tremndose‌ Yeah I believe I have the Barron book. Its the green one correct? Also, what caused you to get a 2? Did you not study enough? From what I can infer from your responses, you seem very knowledgeable.

@Futuredoctor2028 Yep, that’s the one! In my honest opinion, I think it was because it was my first AP class that I had ever taken, and I come from a small school in rural Kentucky, so my school didn’t really offer any classes beforehand to prepare (IE, honors Biology), so I went into an Advanced Biology course without having a basic understanding of any of it. Like yeah, I knew some of the components of a cell, but it is hard to learn all the components of a cell, their function, processes they are involved in, what these processes do/create, the steps of the processes, etc. I also had no idea how much work it took to excel in an AP class, especially a Science one, lol. Plus, my teacher was not fit for teaching an AP level class. I know that she knows Biology pretty well, but she just could not teach it. All we did was read chapters and answer study guide questions based on the chapters, which I understand is helpful, but only if you understand the subject matter, which a lot of the time, I couldn’t even comprehend. Otherwise, you are just regurgitating what the chapter says and not what you actually know. And that quintessentially leads back into the whole “not being prepared beforehand” reason.

I also do not recommend waiting 3 weeks before the exam to study, like I did, lol.

I KNOW I’VE USED ALSO A LOT, BUT ALSO, the stupid FRQ’s. I knew A LOT of the multiple choice from last year, but the stupid long and short answers were, where I believe, I didn’t do so hot. lol. I remember opening the FRQ’s and reading #1 and having NO idea how to even approach it. That was because my teacher claimed to be bad at math and she swore up and down that the only math we would see on that would be Hardy-Weinberg, so that’s the only math we did in class.

But, my honest advice to you if you want to pass, is to get as much Biology reviews in as you can. Quiz yourself everyday. I watched review videos on YouTube, simply because I learn way better when I can see it visually, as opposed to reading about it. I am in AP US History and AP Language and Composition this year, and I have already started reading my review books. We miss a lot for snow down here, and reading review books on snow days may not be an ideal way to spend a break, but they are very helpful.

I hope I helped. Sometimes I can be wordy, and I hope I didn’t bore you to death with my response. lol

@tremndose: No you didn’t bore me at all! (Better than someone giving me a one sentence response, right?)

Thank you so so so much for all your help. You’re great. If I need any English help, I’ll come to you (I’m in lang as well)

Speaking of, what books do you have for lang? I have Kaplan and Cliffs

@futuredoctor2028 My school, through a grant, bought my AP Lang class a new set of textbooks. We use this textbook: http://www.amazon.com/Writing-America-Language-Composition-Context/dp/0132748800 for reading assignments.

I haven’t really bought a book for AP Lang just because we also got an accompaniment to our textbook solely for testprep.

I guess to answer your question, I have a Pearson book for review. lol

Have you taken an AP Lang mock exam yet? I feel okay about the multiple choice and the argument/synthesis essay, but I am absolutely terrified of the rhetorical analysis. I can write good arguments, and I am good at synthesizing an essay using documents and resources, but I just cannot grasp a rhetorical analysis. On every practice essay we have written, I always score the lowest on the rhetorical analysis.

@tremndose We haven’t taken a full mock exam yet, but we have been doing practice essays. And yeah, the rhetorical analysis is the WORST. The MC aint that hot either. I found a few CB practice exams online and the MC is pretty much the exact same style of questions as the Critical Reading section of the SAT. Thats my worst section, so that doesnt give me much hope lol

@FutureDoctor2028‌ Really? The whole state of Kentucky took a full length mock exam a few months back. I agree. Multiply choice is killer on that test, but I feel like since the questions directly pertain to the passage, it shouldn’t be too hard to pinpoint the line of text the question refers to.

I haven’t taken the SAT because the closest school that offers it is 2+ hours away, lol. But I have taken the PSAT twice and both times the Critical Reading part have been my highest.

@tremndose: Yeah, our school requires us to come on a Saturday in March and take a full practice AP exam. But since your CR is the highest, it means you’ll do good on the exam!

Hahaha. I hope so. We took two practice multiple choice tests and I didn’t miss any on the first one, missed 4 or 5 on the second. I appreciate the optimism, though. Lol.

I can’t even remember any plant anatomy and structure on last year’s bio test lol. Don’t stress about it.
