It varies by venue. In smaller venues, the Director/Manager may do everything from booking the performers to sweeping up afterward, with maybe a few volunteer or part-time minimum wage helpers. In larger venues, the positions are often held by two different people with the Manager responsible for day-to-day physical operations (possibly including booking the facilities, but rarely including booking the performers) and the Director, who is usually responsible for the financial and hiring aspects. In large venues, the Director may or may not be directly involved with booking performers, or may be involved with booking performers for some events that are produced by the venue but not others in which the venue is essentially rented for the evening to an outside producer.

My brother is a manager of a local arts center in VA. He books, holds artists’ hands, sells tickets, does radio commercials, runs the box office on the night of the show, closes the theatre at the end of the night. He works pretty long hours. It’s a small-ish community so that is why he does it all I think. There are corporations now that book the really big venues.
