I’m just wondering, but how would Harvey Mudd view me if I drop out of APUSH in second semester? Right now I’m getting a B (and probably will for the final semester grade), but this one class is pulling all my other 6 classes’ grades down to A-'s (I literally have a straight A- other than APUSH) and I spend about 4~5 hours every day just for this class… Right now, I’m considering regular US History for 2nd semester.

I hear some colleges doesn’t like seeing applicants dropping AP classes, but I don’t know about Harvey Mudd. Do you think dropping APUSH would hurt me in the application process?
Advice from ED1 accepted seniors & current HMC students would be very helpful.

Btw, I’m a Korean female junior from so-Cal, considering ED1 for HMC. Other than APUSH I 4 APs & 2 IBs in my schedule right now…

They don’t expect you to be superhuman. I’d drop down to regular USH if you don’t feel passionate enough about it to justify all that work. Mudd is a math/sci school, so advanced technical classes are a lot more important than advanced humanities classes. I think taking AP/IB English is enough to prove you’re challenging yourself outside math/science.

As long as you can write decently well and seem to have interests outside of the STEM fields, you can check off the “humanities box” when it comes to having all the components they look for. They might even take dropping APUSH as a positive because it shows you know how to keep yourself sane.

I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling with APUSH! I remember that I also spent the rest of my day doing US notes.

I agree with esquiar, but I also think that you should just try your best. I still think that getting a B in APUSH is better than A in regular history. Don’t forget that you can explain this situation in your common app essays (don’t make excuses though, but tie this situation in your essay or additional info box - i wrote an essay for the additional info - and explain to them that you’re hardworking).

I also think that getting a higher score on the APUSH test would offset a B or two. Don’t forget to talk to your teacher about e.c. opportunities!
