Hey everyone. I would REALLY appreciate it if you could help me with a few quick questions. I am a Junior in an IB program – currently #2, but I will probably be in the top 5 by the end of senior year. If you can answer ANY (even if not all) of these, I would really appreciate it.

1) How bad does a free period look? I transferred to my school from another, and scheduling confusion made it so I have a free second period. I am worried Ivy schools will look down on this part of my application, though it really wasn’t my fault. I am taking IB Theory of Knowledge in the mornings second semester, so I will be taking 6.5 classes (opposed to the normal 7 and the normal-for-other-juniors-in-my-school 7.5).

2) I know most people take the SAT in March and then again in October. Does it look bad if I take it in June and then October? I just think the extra time is worth the rumored “better curve” of March’s exam. I just wanted to make sure it didn’t look worse to colleges for some strange reason.

3) When should I take the ACT? Can I take it more than once? I was thinking of taking it in June and then in September (they do offer it in September). Is that okay? Is the ACT really different from the SAT? If I study intensely for the SAT, will I make roughly the same score on the ACT?

4) If I am prepared to make a 5 on the APUSH exam, will I be prepared to make an 800 on the SAT II US History exam (which would be the day after)? Is the SAT II easier or harder than the AP exam?

5) Does it look good to colleges to take three SAT Subject Tests and make good scores on all of them? I was thinking of taking the US History SAT II the day after the AP Exam (in May), and then Biology and Math II the month after (June). Could I retake a subject test in the fall of my Senior Year?

6) If I retake the SAT / ACT / SAT II exams in the fall of my Senior year (around September / October), will colleges receive my new results? If I do early decision, will they still receive them? Along these lines, how do colleges see first semester grades if applications are due way before the semester ends?

7) Do colleges take the best score from each subject on the SAT from multiple tests and combine them for a final score, or do they take your best score overall?

8) Is it a good idea to take college classes over the summer? I really want to get into an Ivy League school (namely Yale), so I would appreciate any tips you have!
