<p>seems like a fairly light courseload, since 3 are joke classes (discovery, seminar, and decal). i guess it gives u time to get settled in, get the hang of things, make friends, try out new clubs, make connections, and all that good stuff. u had better strengthen ur schedule in later semesters though.</p>

<p>Geez, you don’t sound too elitist or anything. Take philosophy of mind with Searle and tell me how much of a joke that discovery course is. Or put in hardly any effort in PffP and expect a nice F to C. Which one of the courses on the list is a decal, anyway?</p>

Did I say I have a better courseload? Ridiculous. In fact, I said that I’m taking Physics for Future Presidents as well, so how did I show I’m better than him. Why would I take the same class if I think I’m so good? Get your facts straight. </p>
<p>That class, a 2 unit plant and microbial biology course, and a 1 unit course makes my claim that he has a fairly light courseload a legitimate belief. Notice how I also said there are plus sides to his schedule: “gives u time to get settled in, get the hang of things, make friends, try out new clubs, make connections, and all that good stuff.” There was NOTHING hinting of arrogance in my post. So before you go around being condescending and accustaory, read what people write.</p>
<p>PS: I understand that some seminars and discovery courses are hard. I was just talking this morning to someone about a classics seminar, and we both agreed it was an intense course. My intention was not to call all such classes jokes, but rather that the 1 unit, 2 unit, and 3 unit coureses that he chose were easy classes.</p>

Your presentation implies that classes which are discovery courses, seminars, or decals are pretty much de facto joke classes. I didn’t mean to upset you, so I’m sorry if I did. I don’t think acting “better” is what elitism means. It also has or can have a sense of snobbery and rebuffing the supposed inferior (aka “joke classes.”)</p>

<p>Calling your statements elitist is condescending? I don’t feel it is. I don’t think you’re inferior to me and I don’t think I had an air of superiority. I don’t think I’m superior for saying the courses aren’t jokes. In fact, I don’t even think I’m superior at this very moment. I do read what you or others write, and do my best to understand it. If I see something that seems some way, I think it’s fair if I say so, right? I’m not here to start fights or insult for the sake of insulting, and again, apologize if you were offended, but still feel justified in my original response. </p>
<p>I think you gave a good response about some of the advantages of taking a lighter load. </p>
<p>Anyway, I’m still curious, which of the courses is a decal? To me, it looks like Eng 45B (which isn’t easy, btw, as berkeleygirl mentioned) is a regular class, the plan and microbial biology 10 is a regular class (but only 2 units), poli sci 60AC is a regular class, that L & S C70V/ aka Physics C10 (which I took and it is awesome and the professor rocks) is a regular class (although a “Discovery course” as well and with only 3 units), and poli sci 179 is a colloquium (but neither a decal nor a seminar).</p>
<p>I can understand where you are coming from. However, I still stand by what I said. I do think it’s a fairly easy schedule. In addition, my PS statement clearly takes into account your concerns. I do NOT consider all seminars and discovery courses to be joke classes. Therefore, it was not elitist.</p>
<p>When I say joke classes, I mean easy, manageable courses that students should be able to easily get A’s in or pass in a P/NP format. For example, his 1 unit class should be an easy Pass. The courseload should be really light, and should not hurt his other courses. It’s simply there for interest and/or units. The final grade should never be a concern, because he will most definitely pass. People use the term “joke class” all the time. It doesn’t mean that it’s a dumb class, but rather what I just described. Correct me if you have a different interpretation of the term. </p>
<p>Also, how was what I said elitist? Is it so wrong to consider some classes easy A’s? If you have never considered a class in high school or college to fit such a category, then I retract everything I said.</p>
<p>hey guys (or girls)…i didn’t mean for this to turn into a large argument. reading these boards, i find there’s way too much fighting. this may be a little optimistic, but aren’t we all fellow bears? why fight? if one person’s opinion differs from another’s, that’s alright. you just need to state your differing opinion and not attack that person for their views. i’ve seen alot of people on this board go into ridiculous displays of one-up-manship, and i think it’s somewhat disgraceful. </p>

<p>I took English 45A my first semester and that was hardish. I think it was only because I hadn’t taken a college writing course prior. I heard 45 B is easier than 45A but is still a “weeder.” Nonetheless, English classes at Berkeley are superb, except for the fact the professors use such complicated VERBIAGE that sometimes their lectures are incomprehensible. However, given your other easy-ish courses, I’d say this schedule is a keeper.</p>
