What happens when we discover that UC is not a good fit. I find UCD too big and as freshman we are shut out from the classes that we want cos they are full. This is a serious problem for ESL students. We have 3 quarters to complete Workload 57 to get our English good enough, but after one quarter, we are already shut out of all the Science classes cos they are all full. On the other hand, we are not ready for SS/HUM classes yet. This really leads us to a dead end.
If we leave UC after our first year, what are our options. Apply to a private university, hoping for better service? Go to a community college and start over? Since we are forced to take SS/HUM classes before we are ready, our GPA won’t be good. Could we hide this year from future college applications?

No, you can’t hide the year from future college apps.
Your English seems good enough from your post to handle undergraduate courses. If you feel that isn’t the case, perhaps taking some extra classes to improve your English over the summer or private tutoring would be an option.
You could also take a leave of absence and study English intensively if you really feel you’re not ready to take writing and humanities courses. Or you could transfer to a private college, but you will not be assured of a high gpa or avoiding all language based classes at these schools, either.
You can get a passable education at an American school without mastering the language, but it’s unlikely that you’ll be a top performer.

If they have any classes in ethics at UCD, I suggest you take them. That seems to be an area you are deficient in.

That’s overly harsh, IMHO.

I don’t blame the OP. The UCs are disappointing and an embarrassment…especially for an ELC kid. I get the OP’s frustration.

If you have other options as an incoming freshman, let this be a lesson. Avoid the UCs. I had no other choice. My years in the UC system sucked.

Ok, I see they don’t have ethics classes in the UC system. Nevermind.

I would suggest trying to finish the year because most UCs are on the quarter system and it’s harder to transfer your credits without a full year of courses.

Are we to assume that you’re a full pay international at a UC?

Please explain more what you’re supposed to be taking this year? Are these special courses that won’t count towards your degree? Are you taking ANY courses that count towards your degree or general ed courses? If not, could you? Could you take some math and maybe some foreign language classes? And, maybe some classes that don’t require a lot of writing?

Workload 57 is some kind of pre-writing class is that correct? This is to help you develop your English writing skills before you take Frosh Comp classes…is that correct?

What is your major? career goal?

You could put in apps to transfer for next fall.

Can you concurrently grab some classes at the local community college?

Before you apply to any other US colleges/universities, you really, really need to work on your English.

If you are paying OOS rates for a UC, I’d absolutely leave and apply to smaller schools that will meet your language needs and where you can get classes.

How ironic, Atacom, I didn’t realize “nevermind” was a real word.

Go ■■■■■ elsewhere.
