RAC (Rent-A-Center)?

Has anyone rented furniture from RAC (Rent-A-Center)? What was your experience using them?

Your best bet is Cort Furniture Rental. But most rent-to-own centers are rip-offs. They charge you far more in interest than anything is worth and have been charged with discriminatory practices.

If you need short-term furniture, you’d be better off picking stuff up off Craigslist for cheap or FreeCycle for free. Then offer it to your landlord or friends, put it on the curb, or re-FreeCycle it.

Novelisto … Thanks, I didn’t realize it was rent-to-own…… I gleefully stopped reading after I saw they deliver and pick-up. Which is my problem with getting a bed from Craigslist - D will be in NYC this summer. Place is unfurnished, but not a problem except for a bed. :(

I wouldn’t buy a second-hand mattress either…or rent one. You just never know.

Futon? Cheap mattress-R-Us type store? I know they have Sleepy’s Mattresses in NYC. You might call them up and see what their delivery options are. I’m sure people don’t carry them on the subway!

Actually…I did a quick ‘Mattress Store NYC’ google and found that a bunch of companies do offer free delivery in the City. If you order in advance, they’ll probably be able to have it there as soon as he needs it.

Given the current issue with bedbugs, I would never purchase a used mattress or upholstered furniture via Craigslist or any other way except from someone I knew very well. It’s a shame really–back in college and grad school, every fall I would buy an overstuffed easy chair for my room from the local Goodwill, add a cheap slipcover, and have a comfy place to read (one I could just leave it behind for my successor the next year). Not a smart idea nowadays.

Agree that a futon might be the best solution for OP’s daughter.

You guys are GREAT. THANKS, will do the same google search and have a mattress, box springs and frame delivered. She can place it against a wall - get some cheap pillows and have an instant daybed (without the sides).

I haven’t lived in NYC for a long time. But you can get pretty much anything delivered there.

If you get her a proper Japanese futon (not one of those thin foam rubber things but a thick cotton mat, sewn together into a giant pillow-like mattress), not only can it bend into a couch (of sorts) but it can be rolled into a giant sausage and moved. I slept on one for 10 years and would sleep on one again were it not for Tempur-pedic!

Sorry I called your daughter a ‘he’ earlier.

I have told my DD and her housemates that they should avoid purchasing any used furniture that is upholstered and should never purchase or accept for free used mattress. Even before the return of bed bugs, all I could think about were the nasty things that may have happened on some of that stuff … urinary accidents (human and pet), vomit, blood, spooey, etc.

I agree that a futon would be a good solution. Good luck to your daughter. I hope she has a fun summer in NYC.
