race/ethnicity

should a student of non-causion background indicate his race in the app, or just leave it blank (since it is optional), especially if that college probably gets many applicants of that background?

Hmmm… good question.

If it’s a college which has an over representation of that ethnicity, then it would probably be best to leave it blank. However, the opposite could also be advantagious. Some colleges consider “character/personal qualities,” and in the event that your ethnicity is in the majority, then it would appear to the college that you are a typical student at their college and therefore, if accepted, would attend. Colleges like to enhance yield rates as well as diversity. It kinda depends on the specific situation and what that college is looking for in recent years: yield or diversity.

what do you mean by yield rates?

Yield rate is the percentage of accepted students who attend that college.
