Race

What percent of a minority group is required to check it off when applying to colleges?

In general you check the box of the race your identify with. Your question is very vague. Want to provide specifics?

For each racial/ethnic group, consider whether you can answer year to either of these questions:

A. Do you self-identify as a member of the racial/ethnic group, other than for checking boxes on college applications?
B. Do others commonly identify you as a member of the racial/ethnic group, or a superficially similar-looking one?

Note that identification is generally completely voluntary, and you may choose more than one if applicable.

However, some situations may have their own specific criteria. For example:

  1. Native Americans may be asked to provide tribal enrollment documentation, effectively creating a different category for "Native American with tribal enrollment" versus "Native American without tribal enrollment".
  2. National Hispanic Recognition Program requires "at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino" and self-identified on the PSAT forms.
