Racism at Rhodes?

I’m thinking about applying to Rhodes College, however I have heard that it is largely southern and white. Is that reflective of the admissions standards? I am from pakistan and I have heard that, because of affirmative action type stuff, it is generally easier for us to get in than it is for “white” students. Is that not true of Rhodes? The reason I’m asking is because I don’t want to hurt my chances of getting in to the school by filling out the race portion, although it does say that it has no effect on admission. Also, in terms of the student body, is racism prevalent?

Not entirely related, but is the school very reliant on greek life, or is it possible to have a group of friends that aren’t part of that?

Thanks everyone!

OMG! Ok I’m going to assume you are not trolling and give you the benefit of the doubt being from out of the country and all, but seriously, I cannot imagine finding out you are Pakistani would hurt your chances of admission at all. If anything it is an asset.

Wait - you are kidding - right?

Sorry, I’m not trolling, I know it sounds silly. The reason I asked was because all I kept hearing about was how Rhodes is a very very white college, so I assumed this had to do with their admissions. I’m guessing the reputation may come from it being in the south? I still don’t know much about the student body and social scene. Thank you for your reply :)

Could easily find you a slew of colleges with similar breakdowns, but in any case no admissions in their right mind would set out to “create” a primarily white cohort.
I imagine their student body is a reflection of applicants.
I don’t mean to be rude and again, understand that you are from another country, but it really does not work that way. Not to say there isn’t discrimination against many different groups by individuals in our society, but I really do not think you will find a conscious effort to limit minorities in college admissions. Quite the opposite.

As far as the social scene, best to have a current student/parent answer that here. :)

My daughter is also applying to Rhodes. She is white. Rhodes is a wonderful school and no they are not a white school. While, yes, statistically the largest racial group is white Rhodes has a diverse study body. I agree that the racial break down is based on those who have applied. When you look at their web site you see people of different races. When my daughter toured the school the person who walked around with her was Asian American and we definitely saw other students of different racial backgrounds.
As far as greek life it is my understanding that the greek life is very prominent at Rhodes but when they have parties they are open to the whole student body after a certain time. My daughter is keeping an open mind and she is not sure what she wants to do at this point, if she gets accepted, as far as joining a sorority.

I’m another minority who applied to Rhodes. So far, from what I’ve heard racism is prevalent on campus, but the administration is working on an initiative to diversify the campus.

Racism is not an issue. Just because the school is predominantly white does not infer that it is also a racist environment.

I agree with Goose’s statement that a predominately white student body does not automatically equate to a racist student body. FYI, from the Common Data Set, find below the current racial breakdown at Rhodes. It does not cut and paste well so the full document can be found here: [Rhodes College | Common Data Set](http://www.rhodes.edu/ir/1328.asp)

My son is a recent grad of Rhodes and a racist environment would have been intolerable for him. He never once mentioned racism as a problem at the school. I imagine the level of racism found in at Rhodes mirrors the level of racism found in 18-22 year-olds in our society in general.

My daughter just completed her 1st semester at Rhodes. DD is white, her roommate is African American. Of course my daughter can not speak for her roommate about racism but she says her roommate has a very active social life and goes out nearly every night to a school club/organization or a social event. Her roommate loves Rhodes and they have been texting over winter break about how much they are both looking forward to returning.

My daughter is from the north and she was concerned about attending a college in the south. Rhodes put us in touch with alumni from our area and speaking with them really helped answer some of my daughters questions. If racism is a concern I am sure Rhodes could put you in touch with current students and/or alumni who could share their experiences.

Good luck with your decision!

My daughter is also a freshman at Rhodes and is in a triple with another white girl and an African-American girl. She hasn’t mentioned any experiences with racism at Rhodes. She likes both of her roommates and said she’d be happy to room with either one of them again next year, but her African-American roommate joined a sorority and would likely be rooming with a sorority sister instead.
