Right about what?

Almost everything. They were right in seceding from a tyrannical government, they were right to defend their borders when Lincoln invaded them first (the USS Star of the West invaded the waters of South Carolina before Ft. Sumter was fired on), they were right to try and make peace even though Lincoln was a tyrant who refused to listen, and their Constitution was mostly right (excepting the parts allowing slavery).

Indeed.

(10 char.)

Neverborn - if you say so. Try not to hijack the thread and make it into a debate about “which side is right.”

heroism is relative.

They were heros for southerners who believed in the cause and were saved…

Their constitution was a replica of the past one changing only certain laws regarding slavery.

All right people,

Give me some GOOD and SUPPORTED views and information on why the Civil War was not about slavery.

My competition is in a week and I just want to know as much as possible.

And how should I start my presenation? By introducing the civil war first? or what?Help…

Thanks a lot

Ben.

Well, the South seceded over taxes(namely tariffs) - slavery did not become an issue until Lincoln thought it would make good PR and issued the Emancipation Proclamation which freed slaves in areas they had no jurisdiction over - this is telling showing that they did not care about the slaves - they even limited parishes in Louisiana, keeping people enslaved in any parish that was held by the Union Army.

Never I don’t think Lincoln is to blame for that. How could he free slaves in Union territory? The Congress, the Supreme Court would simply not allow that. I think its brave of the man to do what he did. It certainly took some guts.

It took guts to destroy everything this country was founded upon? It took guts to go to war over taxes and wage a terrible war against people who were doing the same thing the Founding Fathers did 100 years prior?

Right.

I was referring to the freeing the slaves part only.

Actually…neverborn is right on that. Lincoln did free the slaves that way that would become the reason the war was being fought. It wasn’t the original reason though.

He freed no one. It was a PR move only - he didn’t care about slaves. He was willing to sign the Corwin Amendment (the ORIGINAL 13th Amendment protecting slavery FOREVER) to keep the South with the Union. The South did not care, because they were not chiefly concerned with slaves, they were concerned with the tariffs and economic warfare Lincoln was waging.

I do know that already thank you…Done some reading on it. He still freed the slaves, which was a good thing >.<

The modern defenders of the failed Confederacy like to bring up issues other than slavery, but slavery was the 500 lb gorilla of all issues. If there hadn’t been any slavery there wouldn’t have been any war.

A common decoy issue that die-hards like to put out as the real cause of the war is “States Rights”. Sure, but the main “right” those states were fighting for was the right of one human being to own another human being.

If the “heroes” you wish to honor are brave but misguided defenders of that system, well… that’s up to you.

Neverborn, care to back-up some of your statements with citations from reputable books?

coureur: Why was Lincoln willing to sign the Corwin Amendment if the war was over slavery?

MSMDAD: What statement?

What Statements?

Let’s start with these:

He freed no one. It was a PR move only - he didn’t care about slaves. He was willing to sign the Corwin Amendment (the ORIGINAL 13th Amendment protecting slavery FOREVER) to keep the South with the Union. The South did not care, because they were not chiefly concerned with slaves, they were concerned with the tariffs and economic warfare Lincoln was waging.

The Civil War represented the epitome and climax of the growing differences bettween the North and the South with regards to ideology and policies. Indeed, slavery was the “tip of the iceberg” but whether the issue of the agrarian economy in the South vs. the industrial economy in the North and the differing modes of political thought could have eventually pushed both sides to war is a questionable matter.

MSMDAD: Still finishing up last minute midterm type stuff, so I can reply in more detail later. I know Wikipedia isn’t a great source, but go search for “Corwin Amendment” on it, that may tide you for now.
