We’re headed to NYC today and have Thursday and Saturday free but I see rain is projected for both days. I thought we’d walk the High Line but, beyond that, hadn’t had a chance to make other arrangements. Now, with the rain, I’m really at a loss. We do like contemporary art (went to the Whitney last visit) but, otherwise, I’m not sure what our options are. Any suggestions?
Thursday is just DH and me. Saturday our daughters are joining us and we have dinner reservations and theater tickets but nothing planned for the day.
I had a cousin who was in NYC from out of town not too long ago and they had scheduled the NBC Studio Tour and really enjoyed it. You do need to check the museum websites for hours as days that they close vary but in addition to MOMA and the Met, there are also the Brooklyn Museum, the Jewish Museum, the Museum of the City of NY, NY Historical Society which is right across the street practically from the Museum of Natural History and there is also the Morgan Library.
Unless it is really pouring, walking the High Line may still be a great idea, especially on Saturday when it gets so crowded on a nice day.
Museums are certainly a good thing to do, but on a rainy Saturday many others will be there as well. It if its really raining, there are usually interesting movies you would see in other places.
If you haven’t been, the 9/11 memorial is very moving and the museum may be worth a visit as well.
I happen to love museums, so I could easily spend days inside. Besides the Frick (which I love) the Morgan Library is also fantastic. Not as huge as the Metropolitan, so not so overwhelming. In addition, the Neue Galerie is smaller in scale. It houses the famous Woman in Gold painting. The Met’s newest museum is the Met Breuer (I haven’t been there yet) which has modern and contemporary art. The Guggenheim also has modern art. The American Museum of Natural History is also awesome, as is the New York Historical Society.
Some fabulous ideas. Will check them out as soon as I have a chance. I’m sure we’ll go to one museum and there are so many great suggestions here but not sure we can do more than one or two so especially appreciate the additional, non museum suggestions.
I agree that the 911 museum is quite moving. We went last time we were in town. We’ve also done the UN tour but have never been to some of the others: Grand Central, Radio City Music Hall. Have been on, I believe, two of the Tenement Museum tours and highly recommend them to anyone who hasn’t been.
I haven’t done it, but there’s a bus tour called The Ride which has stadium style seating and it’s all enclosed, so would be perfect if the weather is bad. I think it looks pretty entertaining.
