Raised Scores w/ Tutors??

I have an 1800 after my first time taking the test and with the schools I plan on applying to, I need at least a 2000+ in October. Roughly how much (on average) could my score be raised with a sound SAT tutor?

anywhere from -200 to +600 points.
depends on how you mesh with the tutor (and how good they are)

-1000 to +1000

depends on the tutor(s)

i got a tutor, an expensive one through princeton review
my score went from a 1930 (650m 650cr 630w) to a 2210 (680m 800cr 730w). having said that, most of what a tutor tells you is almost common sense and intended for people with extremely low scores. though my scores improved, i am sure that if i studeied the material for the same time myself, i would have done the same or better.

As everyone else has said, it depends a lot on the tutor.

Ask for references before you hire anybody. Call the references, and ask them how much their scores went up. Do this several times and you should be able to find someone who can raise your score significantly.

I can’t imagine that anyone who is really professional would have a problem with your request. Anyone who is really good–i.e., worth your money–should be able to get in touch with some happy customers without any trouble.

The other thing you should know is that while PR and Kaplan sometimes charge $100+/hr. for their one-on-one tutors, the tutors may get paid as little as $20. You may not be getting your money’s worth. Sometimes you can get really good people through those companies, but you may be better off trying to find someone through word-of-mouth or even the Yellow Pages. Just whatever you decide, get references first.

Find a good and cheap student tutor. Easier said than done of course.

For example I charge $20 and I know I teach better than those unnecessarily expensive tutors at PR, Kaplan, or wherever else.

I agree with jovenes132 that those people are out there, although hard to find.

Imagine that you are trying to find jovenes132 on his or her own campus. How will you be able to tell the difference between a good tutor charging $20 an hour and a bad tutor charging $20 an hour? Often, their fliers look exactly the same. You should probably get as many names as possible and call their references.
