Hey, so, I’m a guy who just graduated high school and wants to study video game programming. Is RIT a good school for that? It’s apparently the Princeton Review’s 4th best college for game design in general, but I want to know if it’s a good college for game programming specifically. If it is, well, I heard you need at least a 1770 overall SAT score to get in. I have a 1630. Mind you, I was being incredibly stupid & didn’t study. Obviously I have to study this time around, but is there anything else I should know to get my SAT score up there? As for other parts of getting into the school, I think I might have around or just above the minimum GPA requirements, which is a 3.0. I did not take any extra curriculurs, but I have been teaching myself C# game programming if that helps. Mind you I’ve been out of practice for a while as I’ve broken all my computers, but I’m getting a new one as a graduation present in about a month so I will continue teaching myself C# then.

Anyways, is there any hope of me getting in and is it even the kind of college I would want to get into? Mind you, it’s the best college for game design according to the Princeton Review that’s even remotely close to where I live, as the top 3 are VERY far away.

Please help!

Thanks,
Jonathan.

P.S. I’m taking a gap year first.

I can’t speak to the school, but as for raising your score it is very possible. I raised my score by 170 points in less then a month, just from taking some practice tests.

RIT is as you might expect a largely technical/engineering focused school. Rankings can be deceiving because often they take into account non academic factors, but in this case RIT actually has a strong game design program. They recently renovated the comp. school, and the facilities look excellent. One of the admissions officers was telling me that they recently got several new more powerful computers. In terms of your scores, though you may need a minimum of a 1770 to get in (I’m not sure if this is accurate), it’s always best to shoot for higher because better scores mean a better shot at admission. Just in general, RIT is not too hard a school to get admitted to, so if you raise your SAT scores and your gpa is around a 3.2-3.3 at least, then you should probably be fine, although a kick ass letter of recommendation or two never hurts.

uh, it’s abit of a low reach for you. Bring up your SATs to atleast 1850-1900.

Well, thanks for the help, y’all. I’m currently working as a Photographer at a summer camp, so I really hope I can get a recommendation from them, ya know?

I raised my sat scores from 1660 to 1770 with I suppose what this site would consider some studying.
