what is it and where does one obtain it?

Okay first, I had a good laugh at this question This is one of those things that can’t fully be explained until you get to Stanford.
Trying to define rally gear defeats the purpose of rally gear… (jk) but really, google image “stanford band” and check out the photos where they’re not wearing the uniforms. or google image “stanford rally gear” and look at any of the ones with crazy looking students. Or check out the first 2 photos on this page (the band website): [LSJUMB | What We Do](http://lsjumb.stanford.edu/about/whatwedo/) …this is a particularly good example: [LSJUMB | Pictures](http://lsjumb.stanford.edu/multimedia/pictures/61/)
Rally is like throwing together the craziest, most colorful, weird, and often revealing outfit you can find. This is often accompanied by crazy and irrational, yet fun and exciting behavior.
As for obtaining it - it seems weird to think of acquiring it; rather, it seems to find you. Although it’ll probably come in very handy sometime, I wouldn’t suggest buying rally gear. Ideally, it should be gotten for free and can be improvised. Worst case scenario, there’s always body paint…
Ha, but in all seriousness, look at goodwill or a thrift store for the cheapest, smallest/largest and most colorful pieces you can find. Better yet, if you have any relatives that were happenin’ in the 70s and/or 80s, raid their closet.

Savers (thrift store) is a pretty standard place to get it. Other places I’ve gotten it were garage sales, making it myself, theme parks (good for large fuzzy hats), and actual conventional stores (sufficiently crazy boardshorts are rally).

I totally lol-ed at this question. I seriously didn’t realize that no one else used the phrase until the summer after frosh year. It wormed its way into my vocabulary so quickly, it was like it had always been there. This is my guess for the origin of the phrase. So you know the type of crazy stuff ppl wear for rallies in high school? Rally gear is kinda like that, except it doesn’t match school colors. Like earthwise said, think 80’s type gear. Bright colors, crazy patterns, lots of spandex…hopefully you get the idea.
