*random Question* Why no E?

Ive had this burning question. Why is there no “E” for letter grades?

Was it because they must need the F to stand for Failure?

Or is E just a special letter?

Someone answer!!!

lol

Quite random.

The letter E probably looks too positive. F connotes… horrible things.

But perhaps that negative connotation was built up from the fact that “F” is the lowest grade ;)

e = excellent
it does look positive.

Not to nit pick, but everyone has different connotations for words. Yes, we can generalize that E is more positive than F, but that may be caused by the fact F is already associated with the lowest grade. I mean, one could say that e = egregious if you were to use that argument :P.

well, mine was only an example.

F = FAIL

all that’s to it

someone may perceive F as fantastic…but…who am i kidding fail is the first word that comes to mind

my online class offers “E” as the lowest grade. must be a euphemism for F.

E for euphemism, therefore it’s not bad, but only implies that something else is bad.

no, I mean F stands for FAIL. That’s why there is no E

The lowest grade you can get at my school is an “E.” The teachers don’t give out F’s at all

really. that sounds kind of cool.

My school only goes down to E, and we can’t even get an A+! The reason they use the letter “E” though is because i guess a FAiled test (F) is degrading? at least that’s what they said when I asked. Oh well.

Haha. Well, when I said F connoted negative things, I was thinking more along the lines of the F word. But other F words work too… fail.

We had Es in IGCSE grading. It went A*, A, B, C, D, E, F, U. I got an E on an art exam.

U is the lowest grade then? that is interesting.

Yep, standing for ungraded. Means that its really bad- I think less than 5% of the marks correct. I knew a girl in my year who got a U on the math exam. You have to be really bad to get a U.

Hm. “I got a U.” That sounds quite awkward.

Yeah I guess. I’m just used to it. Now we use 1-7, don’t even have letters. Besides the English no one really uses letters.
