Even though my husband has enough of scientific background to be able to argue very convincingly that Al Gore is full of bs about global warming, he and I both thought Al was hilarious. If he had been that loose during his presidential campaign, he would have won. ;)

drb, I do! I loved that line - it began “Egermency, egermency - everybody to get from street!”

DStark, we may have to go to the movies together some time, for “The Stunt Man” is one of my faves as well. “How tall is King Kong?” I like Peter O’Toole very much and I’ll probably go about systematically watching all of his movies one day. But I’ve never seen “Catch-22.” I shall put it on the list.

Yes, and in a way that makes it seem like it might be fun to get her hair disheveled a little more.

DStark:

I liked Catch-22. When I used to go to Guaymas Mexico scuba diving I used to go to the ‘Catch-22 beach’ where they filmed the movie. At that time the runway was still there as were some remnants of the buildings (which were really false fronts) and there was nothing else around it. I heard they built a Club Med there since then which I think has changed hands to some other name.

Wow. I’m shocked. Such a small sample and there are many posters that like the movie Catch-22. I have no idea why the movie didn’t get better reviews. Ok. It’s not as good as the book, but how could it be as good as the book?

I thought Alan Arkin was a great Yossarian.

ucsducladad, nice anecdote.

I loved Forest Whitaker’s acceptance speech. Genuine, classy and heartfelt.

-We had many good laughs from Ellen’s routine, especially her repartee down in the audience. Photo with Clint was priceless.

-I like Al Gore, but was not that impressed with the routine. I guess it still stings that he isn’t president and I’m having a hard time finding humor in that fact at the moment. The humor trivialzed what I feel is a very important topic. (ok, so I need to lighten up, I know)

-Glad to see Helen Mirren win. Another class act.

. Jennifer Hudson stole my heart with her sweetness.

-All in all, a better night than most, imo!

-

I like Forest Whitaker so I’m glad to see he won. Peter O’Toole or Forest, that’s great.

How about Smoke? Ever see that movie? Forest Whitaker is great in that movie.

Harvey Keitel is in Smoke. One of the best endings of any movie, I hope Harvey Keitel gets an award someday.

Another Inconvenient Truth for/by Al Gore

And I wouldn’t be surprised if he has more than one such home. But I imagine he is positively frugal compared to the greenies in La-La land.

dstark,

Yes, yes, loved the Stuntman. Also, My Favorite Year. Was sad to see him lose only because other sentimental favorites have won in the past (Don Ameche for Cocoon, anyone?).

^We didn’t see “Venus”(and, to be honest, the plot didn’t appeal to me)but I agree that Peter O’Toole was great in “My Favorite Year.”
I know that it was basically a foregone conclusion, but I was still glad that Helen Mirren won for “The Queen.”
Also, I know that “The Departed” was heavily favored and there was the whole history of Martin Scorsese being denied an Oscar after several tries, but after seeing “Letters from Iwo Jima” last month, and being so moved by it, I was hoping that maybe it would pull an upset and win either the Best Director or Best Picture category.

The Russians are coming… “Serpentine! Serpentine!” ![]()
I heard today that Jack has his head shaved for an upcoming movie where he plays a cancer patient who has “escaped.” Sounds hilarious.

There were many moments when those who spoke expressed genuine appreciation for each other, and expressed that they work in artistry. Forrest Whittaker captured it incredibly. Of course there’s the usual ego and what feels like false modesty expressed by some, but most of the top people whom I admire deeply let you know it’s an artform to work together like that. More and more, it’s coming to be understood that these beautiful films are team efforts.

I notice a quieter, more humble tone of the show since 2001, when it was truly a subdued event.

And…I do so love the gowns and tuxes.

I’m remembering that line from the original version of “The In-Laws,” starring Arkin and Peter Falk. It was Peter Falk, as the nutty ex-CIA operative, who said it so memorably. Now there’s a funny movie. The two leads are superb. The recent re-make, with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks, was a baffling waste of time.

Another highpoint of Sunday night’s Oscars: the number by Will Ferrell, Jack Black, and John Reilly. I wish someone would write a musical for them!

frazzled1,
Thank you for pointing out another in my long line of senior moments. You are, of course, correct about the “serpentine” line. I was mixing my Arkins.

Couldn’t find the entire speech, but his was the best IMHO:

I loved his speech. I also loved Forest Whitaker’s.

Okay, I’m a movie fanatic, and saw all the films that were nominated for the big awards, as well as all the short documentaries and the short animated films. I was really pulling for Little Miss Sunshine, but I know comedies have a hard time with Oscar. The Departed wasn’t a satisfying movie for me. After LMS, I would have picked Iwo Jima.

I thought Judi Dench’s performance in Notes on a Scandal might have topped Helen Mirren’s performance in The Queen. Alan Arkin’s role in LMS was nothing compared to Eddie Murphy’s stretch in Dreamgirls. I heard that Hollywood doesn’t like Mr. Murphy too well because he is shy and remote.

Best Foreign Film, The Lives of Others, was right on. Do try to see it if you can. It is wonderful.

My favorite dress was on the third Dreamgirl, whose name I don’t know. Absolutely stunning: bright red with white/diamond trim at the neck.

How did An Inconvenient Truth win Best Song? Did the three Dreamgirls entries split the vote? Did Hollywood cast a sentimental vote for Melissa Etheridge, who has recently battled cancer?

I thought most everyone was dressed tastefully, perhaps ushering in a new era of civility (?)
