Random thoughts

Thanks for the luck! It was a very tiring and trying day, but finally after trying to go it alone for way too long, my girlfriend came along and rescued me. Still a tough day that I don’t want to repeat anytime soon, but at least (most) of my stuff is now at my apartment. (Including me!)

I could never quite get into 24. I watched half of the first season and then stopped. It was a good show, but for some reason I never got the 24 addiction that most of my friends got. I’ve started to watch Lost. It’s a pretty good show for procrastination because every episode ends on a hanger, leaving you wanting the next one. I think Prison Break will be next once I get bored of Lost. :)

My sister’s college graduation is this weekend! I’m flying there tomorrow (and still need to pack) and am looking forward to spending come calm time at home (in a pretty rural area) before returning to Chicago. I know it’s supposed to be parents who think that time moves so quickly, but I remember being the one to tell my sister that she got into her first college! She had given my mom permission to open all of her mail, and my mom left a message for her at the school. I’ve always been better at checking messages than my sister, so I read it and was able to go over and let her know the good news myself. I can’t believe that was four years ago. Time does fly.

Speaking of great TV shows on DVD - back in 2006, my brother-in-law gave me 3 seasons of The Wire on DVD. He was so excited about the show and said that it was the best show on TV. I don’t get HBO, so I hadn’t ever heard of it. I learned that it was about the Baltimore Police Dept. and dealt with drugs and lowlifes and just couldn’t get motivated to watch it. It sure didn’t sound like my kind of show.

Well, last Christmas I got a laptop with a DVD drive and over the holidays I decided to try it out with the first season of The Wire. Although it took me about 3 episodes to really get into it, I was totally hooked! I have to agree with my b-i-l that The Wire IS (well, WAS) the best show on TV. The acting is superb and the realism is unmatched anywhere on TV. I can’t say enough great things about it.

I watched all 3 seasons and went out and got Season 4. I guess Season 5 will be out soon, if it isn’t already, but I’ve already read all the episode recaps online, so I know how the show ended. Amazing.

We’re big West Wing fans in our house. Loved the show when it was on and were all very sad when it ended. It’s on in syndication here every night at 7 and one or more of us often watch. Even if we’re not watching nightly, it’s still fun to ‘drop in’ and see some of our favorite tv characters and listen to the wonderful writing which flowed through those halls. There has been many a day in the past seven years when I wished that Jed Barlet was POTUS.

corranged, happy that you got moved and that all is fine. Loved your story about telling your sister her college news. I have to agree that time does fly by!

A few other tv-related comments. We’ve watched 24 from the beginning and, in my opinion, Season 5 (by far!) was the best. We all hated Season 6. The writing was terrible, the storylines were even more unbelievable than usual, and so many loose ends, it was very disappointing, especially after the highlights of Season 5. 24 is my definition of pure enjoyable fluff on tv (but not season 6!).

Some of my favorite tv watching this year has been In Treatment. It’s about a therapist played by Gabriel Byrne, and his weekly patients. It ran nightly for nine weeks, I believe, although I caught most of it on VOD when I had a chance. The format was a different patient each night, Mon. thru Thurs., then Fri.'s episode was his own visit with his old friend and therapist who was played by Diane Wiest. The rest of the cast was wonderful, with a young unknown actor from Australia who was phenomenal and quite possibly the finest performance I’ve ever seen from someone so young. I highly recommend it.

Watching shows/series/seasons on dvd is such a good way to do it. We’ve done that with many shows we probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise. A few that we enjoyed - Six Feet Under, Friday Night Lights (I was skeptical but this turned out to be excellent), Oz (much brutality but probably the best acted series ever on tv, which is not surprising because it is filled with NYC theatre actors, who have gone on to many other network shows - ), and Dexter which I found surprisingly entertaining, surprising because I didn’t think that a storyline about a serial killer would be able to capture me (many of Oz’s actors are also on this show). Another NYC based show, and thus with the theatre-based actors whom I love  is Rescue Me.

I’ve heard that The Wire is also very good. My mom raves about it so I imagine that eventually we’ll give it a look.

timely, that’s a great one…These are my people! Someone should post that on all the anxt ridden what school should I go to, what should my major be threads…although I’m not sure most students have that much of a sense of humor about themselves. It seems like good wine, that is best developed with age.

Maybe I’ll post it over there for the kids, ebeeeee. You are right; they are the ones who need to hear it!

Another random thought…I’ll sure be glad when the election is over so that most of the posts on the cafe will stop being about politics. :p

^^^^

Another very “timely” remark!!! ;)

It’s hot!!!
Time for monsoon season to start!!!
DD will be home from college on Monday - yay!!!

Still cool, gray and rainy here. More storms and a tornado up north.

Need to get more flowers potted. Will get a jacket and hat and head out to the garden. Hopefully I won’t get blown away! Had my hair cut and styled this morning…won’t be able to tell after I do my yard work. grrrr…

A JACKET!!!
I can only dream, I was meant to live in the north.

Of course there are no gorgeous white sand beaches in Minnesota, although some lovely lakes, I’m told. Gardens are prettier, too, our peak gardening season is Feb-March.

Cangel, it depends what north you’re talking about. I’m in Toronto and it’s 92 here today, (humidex is 102) and so humid that even my dogs don’t want to step outside the air-conditioned house! :)

I miss The Wire. :(

Speaking of coffee commercials I’d heard years ago about the fad for the coffee commercials that were a running soap opera, but had never seen them since we only watch TV shows on DVD. For some reason I was watching a Youtube video of Anthony Stewart Head (Rupert Giles in Buffy) in drag and singing one of the Rocky Horror Picture Show songs and discovered that he was the star of those coffee commercials! I’d had no idea.

Oh another random thought…

Just got off the phone with the IRS - one hour later we have determined we don’t owe them $5000+ dollars. They owe us money! Yay!

That is not a random thought, that’s definately a blessing. Yay for you!!! :)

Guess you are better at math than the IRS, MM

^^^^ That’s an understatement! I rarely make political comments, but as a non-practicing CPA, I wish often for significant major tax reform. We could simplify the lives of millions of Americans and reduce the cost of tax enforcement/administration significantly.

I can finally see a piece of blue sky! Yay! It drizzled all morning… The blooming is really late this year. The rhodies are just peaking, and boy they are gorgeous; usually this time of the year, kids at the local elementary school would be doing their annual volunteer project - picking dead flowers off of the bushes in the schoolyard. D really hated that because her hands got sticky.

Love Jon & Kate, tried to google to find out about Jon getting hair transplants(I fell asleep during episode) and found lots of nasty boards about them. I still love them. Never found out about the hair.
Bought ice cream cupcakes at Costco yesterday-12/$7.99. They were great-we celebrated friend graduating from college in time for 50th BD.

How did the ear end?

Was feeling down w/RFK aniv this week.

This is the second year in a row they haven’t credited my Jan estimated tax payment. They really are idiots over there.

Speaking of monsoons (someone was up thread from here) just saw *Monsoon Wedding *via Netflix watch now (the boys are hogging the TV with friends). What a sweet little movie.

Anyone else planning to watch When We Left Earth, the new space exploration series on The Discovery Channel that starts tomorrow night?
