random weight loss question...

i’m 17 years old and 6’0…i was 173 last week and now im 163 this week. I’m not starving myself, i eat three small meals a day and i go to the gym daily
Is it bad that i lost that much weight in a week since i techincally was never over-weight?

If you were my kid I would be concerned. Are you drinking enough? Three small meals are not enough if you are going to the gym every day. Are you a boy? If so, you need to be consuming significant calories at this time. Where are your parents?

Many factors to consider. 1) Did you weigh yourself at the same time of day on the same scale? 2) Are you lifting free weights or doing cardio at the gym(less likely to lose weight if lifting free weights since it builds muscle mass) 3) Have you been working outside in heat …not unusual to lose weight in summer heat. If these three things don’t explain anything you must be burning more calories than you are taking in?

Because of the heat, I suppose you have been doing a lot of sweating, but 10 lbs in one week is not normal. Did you weigh yourself on the same scale both times? I think you should talk to your mom about this and have her make a doctor appointment. (at least have here call and talk to a nurse)

My son is about your size and he eats 3 FULL meals and many healthy snacks throughout the day. Your body NEEDS food in order to work properly.

Ten pounds of fat is 35,000 calories. You use about 110 calories to run a mile. So you could theoretically run more than ten marathons on the weight that you lost. Your weight range is okay for someone your height but rapid weight loss or gain is something that should be checked out.

Was it the same scale both times? Scales vary enormously.

Do you feel thirsty and/or are you drinking more than usual? If you continue losing, go straight to your doctor. DH was convinced he was having a mid-life miracle when he started losing a lot of weight. His mid-life miracle was diabetes.

You don’t have enough data points to determine much of anything. In order to see what’s really going on you need to -

Use the same scale for your weigh-ins since most scales aren’t accurate and different ones can give quite different readings.

Weigh yourself once a week on the same day and at the same time of day - preferably the most consistent time - i.e. before any meal or only after a consistent meal.

Weigh yourself every week on that same day of the week to see if you’re on a downward trend, upward one, or are just moving up/down between a couple of points (which is normal but usually would be within a few pounds).

If you know you did something unusual, like you just did an intensive workout before eating dinner and lost quite a bit of fluid on an empty stomach, versus not working out and just having a big meal, then you know the results will be inconsistient so don’t be too concerend about what you see.

If you think you’re consistent in the above and have enough data points to feel confident about the trend and you’re experiencing other symptoms it might warrant a trip to the doc to see if something’s going on.

i weigh myself the same time every morning.

So did you drop a consistent 1.5 pounds a day or so for a week?

collegekidd, I don’t know where you live, but if you live in NY, we’ve had some wicked heat in the past week. If you live in a home without air conditioning, I can understand losing 10lbs. of weight during this heat spell. When it’s hot, it’s easy to find yourself eating less as well as losing a lot of water weight.

I wouldn’t worry just yet. Be aware of how much or how little you’re eating every day.
Re-hydrate yourself throughout the day during these heat spells. Monitor your weight for another week or so. However, if you have any new symptoms within the next few days, tell your parents and have them make an appointment for you to see your doctor.

This might be TMI, but marathon runners only consider themselves properly hydrated if their pee is the same color as water. I lost nearly 5# last week from the heat due to not eating (too hot) and sweating.

Drink lots of Gatorade or Propel to get your system back in balance.

You say you eat 3 SMALL meals/day. For your age and activity level this is probably too little. My 13yo son swims nearly 2 hours/day and when not in the pool it seems he either has food in his hand or his head in the fridge looking for more.

Otherwise, how do you feel?
