How would you rank these schools based on academics, campus life (work hard/play hard atmosphere is ideal), and reputation? Which do you think will be the most impressive on a diploma?

UVA - Had some issues with the application process, will be able to transfer in fall of 2012

UT Austin

University of San Diego

Can you afford all those schools? You have to be OOS for 2/3 of them. What problems did you have with UVA preventing you from attending in 2011?

I’m only familiar enough with a few schools… UVA would be more impressive than GMU in general, but I guess it depends on the major sometimes… I’ve heard that UCLA is also quite impressive and UMiami can also be impressive depending on the major.

Look impressive to who, in what region of the country, and what field of work?

Personally, of those, I would prefer UVA, UCLA, Fordham, Occidental, and the two UMs (not necessarily in that order). But this is coming from someone raised on the East Coast, so it’s not like someone in Texas or California or Chicago wouldn’t have different views.

BillyMc–I’m from the east coast as well–I’ll most likely look for work in DC or NYC as I have already established quite a few connections in that region. At the moment I’m thinking that, after getting my undergrad, I’ll go to law school and look for work as an attorney wherever I finish school.

I’d like to hear the perspective of someone from the west-coast or from the south.

Well, schools that would be well known in NYC or DC should receive special attention. These include the regional schools and the “known everywhere” schools.

When I said “east coast”, I meant South Florida (a cultural region separate from “The South”), if that helps. Though I just (two months ago) moved to New Jersey, from which I had moved at 3 1/2. So my views are a mix of some from the northeast and some from south Florida.
