Rank the top 20 national universities in terms of lay prestige (based on your region)

This is mildly amusing, but probably doesn’t deserve its own post.

You must crack yourself up. Get it: “CRACK yourself up”!!! :)

I believe you…

Here’s a doctor who was educated at Yale and Columbia and trained at Stanford"…

[Cosmetic Plastic Surgery for Baltimore, Maryland Residents](http://www.columbiaaesthetic.com/)

I do agree, however, as most others that Harvard is in a class by itself…

Prodigalson, I wish you’d just butt out.

^^^ Hindsight is 20/20…

That’s pretty cheeky of you.

I think this thread is terribly funny. Because the majority of people in PA, with the exception of those who live in upper-class $$$$$ suburbia, know that this is the list:

Penn State.

No, not Harvard. They would be second. They are not the Nittany Lions. People here do not know nor care about Ivy this or Top 20 that. That’s why we vote the way we do!

So anyway…let’s just continue on…Top 20 notwithstanding…

Harvard
Penn
Temple
Pitt
Drexel
Notre Dame. Because Jamie Moyer went there.
Princeton, because it is in New Jersey.
Johns Hopkins. Good for doctors.

Anywhere else on the top 20 they have probably never heard of or don’t know where they are. They probably don’t know where Notre Dame is, either…

CANADA

 1. Harvard
 2. Princeton/MIT

3. Yale/Stanford

Columbia

Brown

Cornell

Dartmouth
(Most don’t know what the last 3 are)
This only applies to the average h.s. student.

oh and John’s Hopkins is on the second tier probabl.

Everyone wants to go there for med school LOL.

The average Canadian seems to be less ignorant than the average American…

CA

Harvard
Yale/Princeton/MIT
Stanford/Caltech (laymen don’t know of Caltech, but for those who do, its dabomb)
Columbia
Dartmouth/Duke
Brown
Cornell
UChicago

kwu, ha!

your top five for the average Joe New Yorker are fine, but the average Joe New Yorker has never, and I mean Never, heard of Johns Hopkins or Emory. To even suggest this would be considered deceptive.

so therefore you have lost all credibility in your rankings

@John117,

I dont know which part of SF you are living in, but none of my friends and relatives (think of 50+) in SF, or other parts of Cali, regard YPM over Stanford. H & S are equal in their viewpoints.

john117, you would be surprised how many of the Calfiornia average Joes have heard of CalTech.

Think of what happens every time an earquake occurs in California and where the news media goes for expert advice on the subject - the CalTech seismologists.

Also think of how often the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is discussed in the media when anything with Space and NASA is mentioned.

Well, for the Northwest (from what I have seen):
Harvard
Stanford
Princeton/Yale
MIT
Dartmouth
Penn
Columbia
Cornell
Northwestern
Brown
Duke
Johns Hopkins
Vanderbilt
Emory/Rice/Notre Dame/CalTech/WashU/Chicago

People simply don’t know about that last line. Which makes me really sad. D:
But outside of my friends people rarely would know these are prestigious schools.

RiceOwl, how can you leave out UDub, Cal, UCLA and USC from your list? In the Northwest, I am sure that those three universities are very highly regarded by the masses.

You caught me, JohnAdams12.

I’ve confused the good opinion of bourgeois Asians, middle class Irish-Italians, and upper crust Jews.

kwu, why did you include Vanderbilt and not Rice? Rice is a Baseball powerhouse!

You know, I was watching “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” the other day–spare me, it’s summer–and there was a question on the program about the location of the Carter Center. The four choices were Stanford, Duke, Emory, and Rice. I was amused.

Sorry, but from where I am, some correlate Stanford with sports/football/Tiger Woods. When you tell them about HYP, the know for sure that smart/rich people go there. Remember, this is LAYMAN views.

Hmm…I don’t know about that actually. A lot of people think I’m talking about Cal Poly (Even my AP Calc BC teacher! Head of the math dept too :[) when I mention Caltech. In a lot of “How to get into Ivy and elite colleges” handbooks that I’ve come across, I never see Caltech mentioned much. When it is, I hear a LOT of praise though, which makes me happy =).

Usually the non-Ivies that I see mentioned are Stanford, MIT, and Duke. UChicago too sometimes.
