Rank vs. Position...

My high school is a very competitive large public school with a strong IB program…

So basically, our guidance counselors report both RANK (the #/620) and another subset they like to call “position”, where GPA ties are accounted for (basically, whenever students are tied they simply rank by last name).

My rank is like 31/610, just slightly shy of the 5% mark.

However, my POSITION is 21/610, slightly over the 5% mark…

Which one will colleges consider?

Both. They will probably give you the benefit of the doubt and take the better number.

Oh that’s a really good thing. Any other input? (Especially from an actual ad-com like Hmom )

Bump up. …

The second one will be given more weight; obviously there it would be silly for your last name to be considered for where you actually stand.
