Rate Your Application II (for RD applicants)

Davidrune started the same thread for all EA candidates. Since there are less than 30 days left until D-day and we are desperately looking for ways to pass the time, I think that it is a good idea to continue with this “tradition”.

Here are the directions that Davidrune posted:
“We all know that Yale rates all sections of your application from one to nine. With nine being the best… So let us rate all parts of our application, and we’ll see what the total adds up to. I’ll try to come up with categories. Keep in mind that… at least according to the ASC site, most of the applicants at Yale are clustered around a seven and five. A nine is extremely rare.”

1 = very bad aka you suck.
5 = positive but uncompelling
9 = amazing… 1 in a 1000.

So here I go (keep in mind that I am a tooooooo big optimist):

Standardized Testing
7 - I have solid scores, but they are nothing exceptional for Yale. I have only one 800 and a weak 660.

Grades in School
7 - straight As, perfect GPA, valedectorian of the class, BUT the educational system in my country is very weak (I’m an international student), and my school is a creepy one. I beleive that schools like Yale are aware of this fact and will consider it while asigning me a rating . Although I have no fault for the educational system in my country and for the academic quality of my school, I take away two points for these two factors and get a 7.

Essays
6.5 - Hmmmmm…well…a little bit confused here…the people who read my essays were split - some loved them and some hated them, but I put much effort and time in them, so I am being generous here and I give myself a 6.5 (although actually I could get a four or five).

Recommendations
8.5 - I could read all three and I beleive that the recs are the most glowing part of my application.

ECs
7 - I have solid activties and much leadership, but they are nothing exceptional. What prevents me from asigning myself a 6 is the fact that I have founded most of them and that they had and continue to have significant influence on others.

Interview
Didn’t have one.

Sooo… I get a 36 / 45 (not 54 because I did not have an interview).
Well, it could have been better.

So, now it’s your turn, guys. Rate your application and try to be as realistic as possible!
Good Luck!!!

Sounds like a good idea, mariela. I was accepted EA already, but for those who are wondering about this scale, check out www.yale.edu/asc and click the links on the left to learn more about scoring.

Test scores: eh…i took the ACT probably a 5 or 6…im a bad test taker.

Grades:7

Essays: I dont know…people said my essays were fun to read…i cant put a number on it.

Recs: probably a 6 or 7…i dont know what constitutes a “good” rec.

EC: 7…if I’m not sleeping or eating…im ECing…and i LOVE it.

Interview: My interview went very very well…i give it an 8…too bad it hardly counts for crap.

Test Scores: 8. I have a 3940/4000.
Grades: 9
Essays: 6
Recs: 6…I didn’t read them
ECs: 4
Interview: 8

41/54

Standardized Testing: 6-7? I had an 800 V and fairly decent scores on the others (including AP/IB exams).

Grades: 9. Straight A’s, all AP or IB classes.

Essays: 6? Hard to be objective. My English teacher and counselor liked them, but that doesn’t mean Yale will.

Recommendations: I haven’t the faintest idea. I didn’t read them.

ECs: 6. Again, hard to be objective. Very involved in Scouts (Eagle Scout, etc.) and a few others, including some I founded.

Interview: 0. I didn’t get one. :(

Total: 27-28/36 (excludes recs and interview). Yikes! Not good.

Standardized Testing: 9 (I have 780/800/800/800/800)

Grades: 7-8? (My school doesn’t calculate GPA or rank, but I have a 3.87 in a pretty hard school.)

Essays: 7 (People seemed to love them.)

Recs: 8 (I didn’t read them but my teachers LOVE me.)

ECs: 5 (I think this is my weak point. I’m involved in a variety of things, but I have no hook and my gc says I’m “involved in a quiet way”)

Interview: 7 (It was a happy, average interview. I think she liked me shrug)

Total: 43-44/54 Blaahh

Ok, for lack of anything better to do, I’ll follow suite:
Standarized Testing: hmm…well for Yale’s standard they suck…but according to everyone else they are good for a URM, w.e. I’ll give it a 4 (Hopefuly they will only look at my ACT, that was slightly better)
Grades: 8-9 I have straight A’s in all AP/Honors classes (12 Ap’s by the time I graduate)
Essays: 6 I guess
Recs: 7-8 I never read them, but the teachers offered to do the recs for me so I’m assuming they were enthusiastic about it
EC’s: 6.5 I’m involved in alot of clubs and have leadership in them, just not research or an internship
Interview: No clue!

Test Scores: 8
Grades: 9
Essays: 5
Recs: 7 … I hope
ECs: 5 … nothing exceptional/on a national level
Interview: 10!!! I don’t think it count for much though :</p>

just curious…is there a point cutoff, where all applicants above will be accepted? Do anyone know what it is?

No there isn’t. There are people who have 1’s that are still accepted (although the chance of that is like 2%)

Test Scores: 7
Grades: 9
Essays: 7
Recs: 8 (I read them, they were outstanding)
ECs: 6
Interview: 7

I have some intangibles going for me, like being the winner of a nat’l essay contest that was a real big deal (holocaust.hklaw.com).

Test SCores : 7 (1480,800,790,730)
Grades: 7
Essays: 7
ECs: 7 (its nothing amazing, but compared to people at my school, its pretty damn good)
Recs: 8-9 (My counselor rec is supposed to be amazing… inside a huge school, he wanted me to read the rec he wrote for me because he thinks that I am outstanding… and my recs are pretty much 1 in a thousand)
Interview: 8 (it went pretty good)

Intangibles: first generation college student, immigrant, from a blue-collar family

44/54

Test Scores: 8(1600, 800, 800, 760…Goofed up Math 2C of all things :()

Grades: 8 (I have very good grades. There are a couple of Bs but I take the hardest courses that my school offers and my school also has a stringent policy on grade inflation and a scoring curve thats particularly cruel on Science students like me)

Essays: 7 (Yale’s application was the last one I sent and I put in a fair bit of time and effort into the essays, plus I got great feedback from everyone who read them)

Recs: 7 (2 were excellent and the other 2 were positive but not fantastically well written)

ECs: 6 (I have dont have too many ECs but I have national recognition in the ones in which I participate, plus 3-4 strong leadership positions)

Interview:1 Didnt have one :(

37/54. Damn. I wish I’d had an interview. :(

Test Scores: 7-mediocre SAT, bunch of 780+ sat iis

Grades: 6 (yeah…not to good in this department)

Essays: 9 (i spent a month on them, and they had spelling errors, but i think that will be overlooked in favor of the writing itself)

Recs: 6 (repetitive…no anectodes…im doomed…)

ECs: 9 (couldn’t be better)

Interview:9 (i can’t think of a single thing that went wrong)

46/54. :(

Test Scores- 7.5 High SAT II’s, Pretty good SAT
Grades/Curriculum- 8 High grades, though not perfect. Hardest course load of any senior
Essays- 8 very reflective on personal growth and independence
Recs- Didn’t see them but my counselor supports me and these teachers love me
EC’s- 9 (athlete)
Interview- 8

Test Scores: 6…Very good but still not stellar…
Grades/Curriculum: 9…I make A’s and B’s, plus there’s a upward trend in all of my grades…and I will have an AA degree when I graduate (2 years of college experience)
Essays: 7…i felt really good about them (and other’s did too)…but I can’t bring myself to say they were the best things ever written…I’m sure there’s some problem with it somewhere…It’s not like i’m a professional writer or anything
Rec’s: 6…that’s dividing the score of 9 by the number of recommendations I turned in…I only saw 2 of them and they were really good, so I say a 6…the other one might be really good too…OR not
EC’s: 5…they’re really good… diverse, active…plus I have a LOT of leadership positions (in all but 2 of them)…but there are a lot of them compared to other’s ECs…so it might also seem as if I just got into them because of college and that I’m not really committed
Interview: 9…this was the really surprising one for me. It was GREAT! He started by telling my mom that we were only gonna be talking for 15-20 min., but we were talking so much that it lasted for an hour and 10 min…Plus, he said he felt I would do really good at Yale and that he was gonna write a really good report for me…YAY!

Anyways… I get a 42/54 (w/o the 3 pts. for the rec I didn’t get to see)
Wow this rating thing has made me feel A LOT better about my app… or maybe I’ve just gotten a whole lot more optimistic…why don’t u guys include things like race, location, and awards that bring a person’s application even higher???

Testing: 7… 1480 with 750 SAT2 average. It’s roughly a 7 on the AI so that’s what I’ll say it is here.
Grades: 8… So far only one B as my final grade throughout high school, and that was freshman year. Top 5% in class taking hardest coursework available at my school.
Essays: 6.5… Focused and well-written but I’m not sure how strong they are.
Recs: 8.5… The strong point of my application, for sure.
ECs: 7… Varsity sports, music, theater, clubs, service and leadership, overall pretty strong but nothing exceptional.
Interview: N/A (never had one… not counting it against me though)

So I’ll give myself a 37/45, probably a tad optimistic but I imagine that most Yale applicants would get this too. To have a very good shot of getting in I’d say one would have to get at least 42 or 43 out of 45 without the interview and probably a 50+ out of 54 with one.

Testing: 6-7…(1550, 790, 750, 750, 740, 720, 660 dunno what happened on bio)
Grades- 7 - 1 B+ in AP Vergil which i shouldnt have gotten, Senior Midyear all A+s
Essays- 6-7 - decent essays i think although somewhat cliche
Recs- 6-7? - no clue, didn’r read
ECs- 7- 8 - All state musician, 2 varsity sports, leadership…etc
Interview- 7 good interview…not superb

Standardized Testing: 9. 1600 SAT I, 790 Writing, 780 Math IIC, 720 U.S. History, 34 ACT.

Grades in School: 9. All A’s, 3.94 unweighted GPA from a challenging private high school. Total of 8 APs.

Essays: 6. Not bad but not perfect.

Reccomendations: 7. All three from people who are nuts about me.

ECs: 5. Captain of this, varsity that, president of club, but nothing Yale hasn’t seen before.

Interview: 7. Went very well but ran out of time; her last words were that she was going to give me a great write-up.

SCORE: 43 / 54 = 0.796.

A trend I noticed from last year’s “Rate my Application” was that people who were too generous with the scale or gave themselves “bonus points” generally didn’t get in. It seemed like the higher the score, the lower the chances of getting in.
