I’m sorry for posting this here; I know it isn’t the best place for questions like this. However, I’m hoping that someone here can help me.

I’m a sophomore doing very poorly in one of the classes required for my major. I think I will probably need to re-take the course. Does anyone know what Weinberg’s policies are about this? Does the new grade replace the old grade, or is it averaged with it? Am I even allowed to re-take a class at all? I’ve spent a lot of time searching through NU’s website, but I can’t find Weinberg’s policies on this (all I can find are Medill’s, Kellogg’s, and the graduate school’s policies).

Has anyone had experience with this, or can anyone at least point me to a website that explains Weinberg’s policies?

Thank you so much!

Can you drop it? Northwestern has a notoriously late drop deadline (I think its Week 6 or Week 7).

I would go to the Weinberg office. It’s one of those house-looking buildings on the west side of Sheridan between Emerson and Noyes.

Also, ask your WCAS advisor. Hopefully you have already met your adviser and built some rapport. My adviser was a huge asset. Not just personally, but also in terms of getting into classes and staying on track. I graduated early and did a thesis, so I used my adviser to help me out and make sure everything goes okay. If you haven’t met him/her, now is the perfect time.

Suggestion: ask your adviser.
Side-rant: talk to your adviser.

No, I can’t drop it. The deadline was October 29th. If this last midterm had come before then, I certainly would have dropped it, but unfortunately, it was a week too late.

I was already planning on talking to my advisor. I have met with him before and he was very friendly and helpful. However, I would just like to have a basic idea of what my options are before I go talk to him, for a couple reasons:

1) I want to show that I’m taking this seriously and that I’ve been proactive in trying to figure out how to fix it.
2) If it turns out to be really bad (e.g., “You totally f-ed up, now there’s no way you can do this major/graduate on time, etc.”), I don’t want to freak out in front of him.
3)The sooner I know what my options are, the sooner I can put them into action (for example, I won’t have to do one meeting learning about my options, then later go back for another meeting to discuss which option I’d like to do). I’d like to get this resolved as quickly as possible, especially with registration for Winter Quarter coming up.

Thank you for your response, CerebralAssassin.

Does anyone else have any advice? Again, has anyone in Weinberg ever re-taken a class, or does anyone know what Weinberg’s policy on re-taking classes is?

They may not let you retake if you get a C but even if you can retake, my guess is both grades will show up on your transcript and count toward your GPA. But for graduation purpose, you only get 1 credit (because you are not learning new stuff).

I believe you can still drop now but it will be listed with a “W” (withdraw) on your transcript; the withdrawal would require “academic review”, which probably means your advisor’s approval. Withdrawal won’t affect your GPA however. NU is vague about this but I know some schools have deadline even for withdrawal also so you should talk to your advisor as soon as possible.

Have you talked to the professor to see what kind of grade you could be getting yet?
